Electric Circuits Fundamentals
Think about the last time you plugged in your phone charger - you were creating an electric circuit! Electric current happens when electrons flow through a conductor, measured in amperes (A). The basic rule is simple: 1 ampere equals 1 coulomb of charge flowing per second.
Charge is what makes electricity possible. Atoms normally have equal positive and negative charges, but when you rub a balloon on your hair, electrons transfer between materials. This creates static charge - the balloon becomes negatively charged (gains electrons) while your hair becomes positively charged (loses electrons).
Potential difference, measured in volts (V), is like electrical pressure that pushes current through a circuit. Without it, electrons wouldn't flow at all. Think of it as the energy given to each coulomb of charge - just like water pressure pushes water through pipes.
Resistance (measured in ohms, Ω) fights against current flow. When electrons bump into atoms in wires and components, they create resistance. Longer wires have more resistance because electrons collide with more atoms along the way.
Quick Tip: Remember Ohm's Law: V = IR. Voltage equals current times resistance - this equation solves most circuit problems!
Circuit Types and Component Behaviour
Series circuits connect components in a single loop - if one component fails, everything stops working (like old Christmas lights). The current stays the same throughout, but the voltage gets shared between components.
Parallel circuits create multiple paths for current. Each branch works independently, so if your bedroom light breaks, the hallway light keeps working. The voltage across each branch stays the same, but current splits between branches.
Different components behave uniquely in circuits. Ohmic conductors (like simple resistors) have constant resistance - their current increases steadily with voltage. Filament lamps get hotter as current increases, making their resistance go up too. Diodes only allow current to flow in one direction.
Thermistors and LDRs are clever components that respond to their environment. As temperature increases, thermistor resistance decreases. When light gets brighter, LDR resistance drops - that's how automatic street lights work!
