Think of fields as invisible zones of influence around objects that create non-contact forces. Just like a magnet can pull a paperclip without touching it, objects with mass or electric charge create these invisible force fields around them.
Newton's law of gravitation shows us exactly how gravitational attraction works. The force between two masses depends on how heavy they are and how far apart they sit: F = GM₁M₂/r². The bigger the masses, the stronger the pull - but double the distance and you get four times weaker force.
Here's the clever bit: when we rearrange this equation, we get gravitational field strength . This tells us the force per kilogram that any object would experience at that point in space. It's why everything falls at 9.8 m/s² near Earth's surface, regardless of its mass.
Key insight: Gravitational fields are always attractive - they never push objects away, only pull them together.

Gravitational field lines are like invisible arrows pointing towards the centre of any mass, showing the direction a test mass would be pulled. These create radial fields around spherical objects like planets - imagine spokes on a wheel all pointing inward.
The beauty of field lines is their simplicity: they always point in the direction of the gravitational force. Around Earth, they all converge toward the centre, which is why "down" always means towards Earth's core, no matter where you stand on the planet.
When you zoom into a small section of Earth's surface, the field lines appear almost parallel - that's why we can treat gravity as uniform over small areas. This makes calculations much easier for everyday physics problems.
Remember: The closer together the field lines, the stronger the gravitational field at that point.

Gravitational potential energy represents the work needed to move a mass from infinity to a specific point. The negative sign shows that gravitational fields are attractive - you'd need to do work to pull objects apart.
Gravitational potential is the potential energy per unit mass. It's a scalar quantity, which makes it easier to work with when dealing with multiple masses. Think of it as the "gravitational depth" at any point in space.
The relationship between field strength and potential is crucial: field strength equals the negative gradient of potential. This means steeper potential "hills" create stronger gravitational fields.
Pro tip: Remember that gravitational potential is always negative because we define zero potential at infinite distance.

Electric fields work similarly to gravitational fields, but with one major difference - they can attract or repel. Coulomb's law shows that the force between charges depends on their size and separation, just like gravity.
Electric field strength measures force per unit charge . In uniform fields between parallel plates, this stays constant everywhere. In radial fields around point charges, it varies with distance .
Unlike gravity, electric forces can accelerate charged particles in straight lines or curves, depending on the field direction. Positive charges follow field lines, while negative charges move against them. This principle powers everything from inkjet printers to particle accelerators.
Key difference: Electric fields can be attractive (opposite charges) or repulsive (like charges), while gravitational fields only attract.

Electric potential represents the potential energy per unit charge at any point. Unlike gravitational potential, electric potential can be positive or negative, depending on whether the source charge attracts or repels.
The potential difference between two points tells us the energy needed to move a unit charge between them . This is the fundamental principle behind batteries and electrical circuits.
Graphically, the gradient of a potential-distance graph gives the electric field strength at that point. Steeper gradients mean stronger fields. The area under a field strength-distance graph gives the potential difference.
Practical note: Potential difference is what makes current flow in circuits - charges naturally move from high to low potential.

When dealing with multiple charges or masses, the superposition principle saves the day. The total field equals the sum of individual fields, while total potential equals the sum of individual potentials.
Here's the crucial difference: field strength is a vector (has direction), so you must add components carefully. Potential is a scalar (just a number), so you simply add the values algebraically.
For example, two equal but opposite charges create zero potential at their midpoint, but the field strength doesn't cancel - both charges push a positive test charge in the same direction horizontally.
This principle explains complex situations like the motion of electrons in atoms or the behaviour of charges in conductors.
Calculation tip: Always resolve field vectors into components before adding them together for the resultant field.

Both electric and gravitational fields follow remarkably similar mathematical patterns. Force laws, field strengths, and potentials all use inverse square relationships, making the physics beautifully symmetric.
The key relationships mirror each other: F = ma becomes F = qE for electric fields, while potential energy relationships follow identical patterns. Field strength always equals the negative gradient of potential in both cases.
However, the fundamental difference lies in their nature: gravitational fields only attract, while electric fields can attract or repel. This makes electric fields far more versatile for technological applications.
Big picture: Understanding these field concepts unlocks everything from satellite mechanics to electronic devices - they're the foundation of modern physics and technology.
