This GCSE Physical Education exam covers the fundamental concepts you... Show more

This is your WJEC GCSE Physical Education Unit 1 exam paper worth 100 marks total. You'll have 2 hours to complete five questions covering different aspects of PE theory.
The exam includes two video clips that you'll watch three times each - one showing a skier and another showing a climber. You'll get specific time allocations to answer questions after each viewing, so use this time wisely to jot down observations.
Remember to bring black ink pens only (no gel pens or correction fluid), and you can use pencils for any diagrams. The questions build from basic identification tasks to more complex analysis, so pace yourself accordingly.
Top Tip: Watch the video clips carefully on the first viewing to get the overall picture, then focus on specific details during the repeat showings.

When analysing movement, you need to understand planes of movement and how muscles work together. A skier in the tuck position moves primarily in the sagittal plane (think forward and backward movements).
The quadriceps and hamstrings are the key muscle pair controlling knee movement. In the tuck position, these muscles perform an isometric contraction - they're working hard to hold the position but aren't actually changing length.
Understanding these biomechanical principles helps you analyse any sporting movement. Think about which direction the movement occurs, which muscles are involved, and whether they're shortening, lengthening, or staying the same length.
Remember: Isometric = same length, isotonic = changing length (either shortening for concentric or lengthening for eccentric).

Muscular endurance is the fitness component that allows you to exercise a specific muscle group over time - exactly what skiers need in their legs during long descents.
The principle of overload means gradually increasing training demands through frequency (how often), intensity (how hard), or time (how long). A skier might train more days per week, increase slope difficulty, or extend training sessions.
Barriers to participation in skiing often include cost (equipment and lift passes are expensive) and accessibility (not everyone lives near mountains). Weather dependency and injury risk are also significant concerns.
Training Tip: Always apply overload gradually - sudden increases lead to injury and burnout.

Skiing predominantly uses the anaerobic energy system because it involves short, intense bursts of activity. This system relies on carbohydrates as its main fuel source, breaking down stored energy without needing oxygen.
Understanding sports ethics is crucial for fair play. Sportsmanship means following rules and conventions properly. Gamesmanship involves bending rules to gain advantages. Deviance is any behaviour that goes against accepted norms.
Professional athletes might show deviance due to intense pressure to win, financial rewards, or career demands. The stakes are so high that some athletes feel tempted to break rules or social expectations.
Key Point: The anaerobic system powers high-intensity, short-duration activities - perfect for explosive skiing movements.

Climbing demonstrates several key learning concepts. The mechanical guidance shown in the video (likely safety ropes and harnesses) helps support learners physically while they develop skills.
Climbing sits towards the self-paced end of the continuum because climbers control when to move, rest, or attempt challenging sections. External factors like weather exist, but the athlete largely determines timing and pace.
An autonomous stage learner in climbing would demonstrate smooth, efficient movements with minimal conscious thought about basic techniques. They can focus on route strategy rather than fundamental skills like grip or foot placement.
Learning Stages: Cognitive (thinking hard), associative (getting smoother), autonomous (automatic performance).

Mental preparation for climbing involves several strategies. Visualisation helps climbers mentally rehearse routes and movements. Goal setting provides clear targets, while relaxation techniques manage anxiety and tension.
Coaches impact climbers through technical instruction (teaching proper techniques), motivation (encouraging persistence), and safety management (ensuring proper equipment use and risk assessment).
The information processing model shows how we handle sporting information: input (seeing holds), decision-making (choosing routes), output (making moves), and feedback (feeling success or failure). Each stage affects performance quality.
Mental Game: Top performers often say sport is 90% mental - your mind can make or break your physical abilities.

Squash analysis reveals complex movement patterns. The lunge position typically shows a third-class lever system at the knee, with flexion occurring as the player drops low, involving bones like the femur moving around a frontal axis.
Agility - the ability to change direction quickly and accurately - is essential for squash players who must react rapidly to opponent shots. Valid agility tests include the Illinois agility test or T-test.
Different stretching methods serve different purposes. Active stretching means you control the stretch yourself, passive stretching involves external help (partner or equipment), while dynamic stretching uses movement to increase range of motion.
Agility vs Speed: Speed is just moving fast in one direction; agility combines speed with direction changes and control.

Validity in fitness testing means the test actually measures what it claims to measure. Without validity, your test results are meaningless - like using a flexibility test to measure cardiovascular fitness.
Technology's impact on sport creates both opportunities and challenges. Performance analysis software helps athletes improve technique, while social media increases fan engagement but can create pressure. Equipment advances enhance performance but may create unfair advantages.
Technology also affects participation through virtual training apps making fitness more accessible, though it might reduce face-to-face coaching relationships. The balance between technological enhancement and traditional sporting values continues evolving.
Testing Reality Check: A test might be reliable (gives consistent results) but still invalid (measures the wrong thing) - you need both qualities.
