Democracy isn't just about elections every few years - it's... Show more

Democracy gives you real power, even if it doesn't always feel like it. Citizen rule means you get to elect representatives who make decisions on your behalf - that's why Britain holds General Elections roughly every five years.
Individual rights ensure everyone gets equal treatment under the law. The Equal Pay Act is a perfect example of this principle in action, protecting workers from discrimination.
Free and fair elections happen regularly so your voice can be heard. The 2014 Scottish Independence Referendum saw 3.6 million people participate, showing how democracy allows major decisions to be made by the people themselves.
Quick Fact: Elections must be regular and accessible to all adult citizens - this ensures the government truly represents the will of the people.

Some powers are too important to be devolved, so Westminster keeps control of three key areas. Immigration stays with the UK Parliament because border control affects the entire nation - Boris Johnson's 2020 Australian-style points system shows how these decisions impact everyone.
Defence remains at Westminster level since national security can't be fragmented. When Parliament voted to renew the Trident nuclear submarine programme in 2016, it was making decisions for the whole UK's safety.
Welfare systems stay centralised to ensure fair distribution across the country. The 2021 increase to the Real Living Wage for over-23s demonstrates how Westminster manages benefits and pensions nationwide.
Remember: Reserved powers exist to maintain consistency across the entire UK on issues that affect everyone.

The PM wields enormous power as head of government, making final decisions on policies and laws. Theresa May's cancellation of the December 2018 Brexit vote shows how much control the PM has over parliamentary business.
As the UK's representative, the PM acts on behalf of Britain both domestically and internationally. May being first to congratulate Donald Trump on his election victory demonstrates this diplomatic role in action.
The power to appoint cabinet members lets the PM reward loyalty and bring in expertise. Jacob Rees-Mogg's 2019 cabinet appointment shows how the PM can reshape government by promoting allies.
Key Point: The PM's role combines domestic leadership with international representation, making them one of the most powerful people in the country.

Your right to protest means you can actually challenge the government when you disagree with their policies. The 2021 climate change protests by school children prove that even young people can demand action from those in power.
Voting rights give you a direct say in who represents your area. When Rutherglen and Hamilton West elected Michael Shanks as their MP, local voices shaped who speaks for them in Parliament.
Joining political parties lets you actively campaign for the changes you want to see. With over 400,000 Labour Party members, you can see how collective action amplifies individual voices.
Your Power: These rights aren't just theoretical - they're tools you can use to influence the political system right now.

Many see voting as both a right and responsibility in democracy, especially knowing that people worldwide lack this freedom. The 70% turnout in the 2019 General Election shows how seriously many Britons take this civic duty.
Strategic voting happens when people vote tactically to achieve their preferred outcomes. SNP supporters often vote specifically because they favour Scottish independence, showing how personal beliefs drive electoral choices.
Some voters are motivated by keeping certain parties out of power rather than just supporting their favourites. This tactical approach can significantly impact election results.
Think About It: Your vote matters not just for who wins, but for sending messages about what issues matter to you.

Lack of trust in politicians drives many people away from voting. When MP Margaret Ferrier travelled with COVID-19 during the pandemic and refused to resign, it reinforced cynical views about political integrity.
Some people don't think their vote matters, especially those facing poverty who feel disconnected from the political process. This sense of powerlessness can create a cycle where their voices remain unheard.
Alternative participation through pressure groups or trade unions appeals to those seeking more direct action. Teachers joining the EIS union shows how people find other ways to protect their interests.
Reality Check: Non-voting often reflects deeper issues about trust and representation in our democratic system.

Publishing and distributing leaflets remains a grassroots campaign method where ordinary party members directly reach voters. SNP's 2019 leaflet campaigns showcased their governmental achievements to win support.
Canvassing involves face-to-face conversations about party policies and candidates. The door-to-door campaigning in Glasgow during 2019 shows how personal contact can influence voting decisions.
Voting itself represents both your democratic right and civic responsibility. The Conservative victory in 2019 demonstrates how individual votes collectively determine national outcomes.
Get Involved: Elections need active participation from ordinary citizens - your involvement can genuinely influence results.

Manifestos outline party promises and policies for voters to evaluate. The Conservatives' 2019 "Get Brexit Done" pledge shows how clear commitments can win elections.
Recruiting candidates involves finding people who appeal to voters whilst maintaining party discipline. Labour's efforts to recruit more women candidates demonstrates how parties adapt to show they represent diverse communities.
Campaigning requires organised efforts to convince voters through street work and door-knocking. Labour's successful campaign for Michael Shanks in Rutherglen and Hamilton West shows how effective local campaigning can be.
Behind the Scenes: Political parties are essentially organising machines that turn ideas into electoral success.

Social media helps parties reach younger voters who traditionally participate less in elections. The SNP's 300,000+ Twitter followers demonstrate how digital platforms can build political engagement.
Newspapers target older voters who tend to have higher turnout rates. The Sun's support for SNP in Scotland shows how traditional media still influences electoral outcomes.
Television reaches the broadest audience since most people get political information from TV. SNP's 2021 broadcast highlighting their COVID-19 response shows how parties use TV to showcase achievements.
Media Reality: Different age groups consume political information differently, so parties must use multiple platforms to reach everyone.

Protests create public attention and can force government responses. Extinction Rebellion's demonstrations costing £37 million show how disruptive action can make authorities take notice.
Social media campaigns amplify messages to wider audiences beyond traditional supporters. Extinction Rebellion's 300,000 Twitter followers prove how digital platforms multiply influence.
Direct action through strikes and public demonstrations creates immediate pressure on decision-makers. The 2019 rush-hour subway disruptions in London demonstrate how strategic timing maximises impact.
Pressure Power: These groups show that democracy isn't just about voting - sustained campaigns between elections can drive real change.
