The "This Girl Can" advertisement is a key text for your media studies exam, particularly for Component 1A questions. The advert deliberately challenges stereotypes about women in sports through several media techniques.
For media language analysis, examiners want you to explore how meanings are created through images, typography, layout, intertextuality, and genre conventions. Look for how visual codes like facial expressions and body language communicate confidence and authenticity.
When tackling representation questions, you'll need to explain how social and cultural contexts influence the advert's approach. You might be asked to compare gender, ethnicity, or class representation between "This Girl Can" and an unseen text.
Remember: Practice answering these questions using PEEL paragraphs (Point, Evidence, Explain, Link) to structure your analysis clearly and effectively.

The advert features a medium close-up of a thirty-something woman with wet hair and a sweaty appearance. Her raised arms and genuine smile represent liberation from typical feminine beauty standards. This challenges the stereotype that it's "unladylike" to sweat, creating a countertype rather than conforming to expectations.
The woman functions as a Proppian Hero rather than a "Princess" or "Damsel-in-distress." Her neon patterned leggings and casual turquoise vest aren't high-end athletic wear, reinforcing that the campaign focuses on "real women" rather than elite athletes. This creates an inclusive rather than aspirational message.
The shallow focus technique (foreground clear, background blurred) emphasizes that other people's opinions aren't important - what matters is personal fitness goals and self-esteem. This visual choice deliberately shifts attention away from external judgment to internal satisfaction.
Exam tip: When analyzing images, always connect visual techniques to their purpose - how do they challenge stereotypes and create new meanings for the audience?

The slogan "Sweating like a pig, feeling like a fox" uses clever antithesis and juxtaposition to subvert sexist stereotypes. This idiom deliberately transforms negative animal imagery into something positive and empowering. The alliteration in "feeling like a fox" emphasizes breaking free from limiting stereotypes.
The campaign masthead "THIS GIRL CAN" appears in capital letters, creating a bold visual statement. This typographical choice emphasizes determination and directly challenges the patriarchal dominance in sports. The term "girl" is deliberately reclaimed from its pejorative use (as in "throw like a girl") to create a sense of collective female strength.
The inclusion of logos for the National Lottery, Sport England and the hashtag #thisgirlcan shows media convergence between different organizations. The small size and positioning of these logos prioritize the campaign's message over brand identity, emphasizing social change over commercial interests.
Writing technique: When analyzing written language, connect specific language techniques (like alliteration or juxtaposition) to the broader messages about gender representation.

The sans-serif typography used in the masthead creates an informal, accessible feel. This typographical choice suggests the campaign aims to include women of all social classes, avoiding any sense of elitism.
The serif typography used throughout the campaign establishes a distinctive house style that creates brand recognition. This consistent design element links all adverts in the series, reinforcing the campaign's core theme of women transcending stereotypes in exercise and sports.
The central positioning of the slogan dominates the print advertisement, emphasizing that the message is more important than appearances. The imperative verb "CAN" in the masthead creates a sense of authority, while the choice of "GIRL" makes the message inclusive for all females regardless of age.
Design insight: Consider how the layout creates visual hierarchy - what elements draw your eye first and why? How does this prioritization of elements support the advert's message?

The advert carefully challenges gender stereotypes through several techniques. While other gym members wear stereotypically feminine pink clothing, the main subject wears a turquoise vest, subverting expectations. The campaign deliberately de-stigmatizes the term "girl," transforming it from a pejorative term (as in "throw like a girl") to something positive and inclusive.
The female subject isn't objectified or sexualized, which creates a countertype in advertising. By focusing on her activity rather than appearance, the advert challenges the notion that women in media must be displayed for a male gaze. The absence of male figures emphasizes that women are the primary audience.
The campaign's goal is to challenge ideological barriers to female sports participation, particularly the stigma that exercise is only for men or elite female athletes. It promotes the message that exercise should focus on personal wellbeing rather than meeting external standards or expectations.

"This Girl Can" is a collaborative campaign between Sport England and the National Lottery with a clear social purpose - to break down the "fear of judgment" barrier that prevents women from participating in sports. As a government-backed initiative without commercial aims, it focuses purely on social change.
Sport England's research revealed a significant gender gap in sports participation: two million fewer women aged 14-40 participate regularly compared to men. Their findings showed that 13 million women wanted to be more active, with 6 million not active at all, and that fear of judgment was the primary barrier.
The campaign has achieved measurable success, with 1.6 million women starting to exercise as a result - a growth rate that exceeds that of men. This demonstrates how media campaigns can effectively challenge stereotypes and create real social change when they address specific barriers identified through research.
Historical perspective: Understanding the campaign's context helps explain its approach - it directly targets the documented barriers to female participation rather than simply promoting a product.

For Media Language questions, be ready to identify specific codes and conventions in the advert. Analyze how layout, design, images, typography and mise-en-scene (props, costumes, settings) create meaning. Consider how historical context influences these choices.
When tackling Representation questions, focus on how people are portrayed in terms of gender, ethnicity, age and class. Apply relevant feminist theories and examine how stereotypes are used or challenged. Analyze the messages and values communicated and consider audience responses.
In the exam, "This Girl Can" could appear in Component 1A Language or Representation questions. If it's used as a "seen text" for Representation, you'll likely compare it with an unseen print advertisement, focusing on representation of gender, ethnicity, age, or health and exercise.
Final tip: Practice writing comparative analyses between "This Girl Can" and other print adverts with different approaches to representing women, sports, or health to prepare for potential exam scenarios.

The app is very easy to use and well designed. I have found everything I was looking for so far and have been able to learn a lot from the presentations! I will definitely use the app for a class assignment! And of course it also helps a lot as an inspiration.

This app is really great. There are so many study notes and help [...]. My problem subject is French, for example, and the app has so many options for help. Thanks to this app, I have improved my French. I would recommend it to anyone.

Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.

Just amazing. Let's me revise 10x better, this app is a quick 10/10. I highly recommend it to anyone. I can watch and search for notes. I can save them in the subject folder. I can revise it any time when I come back. If you haven't tried this app, you're really missing out.

This app has made me feel so much more confident in my exam prep, not only through boosting my own self confidence through the features that allow you to connect with others and feel less alone, but also through the way the app itself is centred around making you feel better. It is easy to navigate, fun to use, and helpful to anyone struggling in absolutely any way.

The app's just great! All I have to do is enter the topic in the search bar and I get the response real fast. I don't have to watch 10 YouTube videos to understand something, so I'm saving my time. Highly recommended!

I know a lot of apps use fake accounts to boost their reviews but this app deserves it all. Originally I was getting 4 in my English exams and this time I got a grade 7. I didnโt even know about this app three days until the exam and it has helped A LOT. Please actually trust me and use it as Iโm sure you too will see developments.
