Understanding Media Audiences
Audience targeting is all about knowing who you're talking to and how to speak their language. Take that classic Tide advert from the 1950s - it wasn't accidentally aimed at housewives. The producers deliberately used reassuring language like "brand leader" and "miracle" because they knew their target demographic of lower-middle class women needed convincing about new domestic products.
The preferred reading is what the producers actually want you to think. With Tide, they wanted women to believe this new product would solve all their washing problems, despite being unfamiliar. The direct address using "you" and "your wash" made it feel personal and trustworthy.
But here's the thing - not everyone reads media the same way. You might have a negotiated reading (partly agreeing) or an oppositional reading (completely disagreeing) depending on your own beliefs and experiences. A working-class Labour supporter reading The Times might completely reject its right-wing political stance.
Remember: Producers encode specific meanings, but as an active audience member, you decode them through your own lens of experience and beliefs.
Different demographic groups respond differently to the same content. The Times targets well-educated, middle-class readers over 35 with its serious political coverage, while The Mirror appeals to working-class audiences with a different political perspective. Neither approach is wrong - they're just speaking to different people.
