This is a Year 9 maths test that covers loads... Show more

You've got one hour to tackle this test, and calculators are completely off-limits! This might sound scary, but it's actually brilliant practice for building your mental maths confidence.
The test starts easy and gets progressively harder, which means you can build momentum as you go. Make sure you've got a pen, pencil, rubber, and ruler ready - and grab some tracing paper if you can find it.
Always show your working because you can pick up marks even if your final answer isn't perfect. Write everything directly on the test paper and check your answers at the end.
Top Tip: Don't panic if you get stuck - the questions start simple and build up, so tackle what you can first!

Two key formulae are provided that you absolutely must remember for your GCSEs. The trapezium area formula is ½h, where 'a' and 'b' are the parallel sides and 'h' is the height between them.
For volume of a prism, simply multiply the area of the cross-section by the length. This works for any prism shape - triangular, rectangular, or more complex ones.
These formulae pop up constantly in exams, so getting comfortable with them now will save you loads of stress later. Practice sketching the shapes and labelling the measurements clearly.
Remember: You can't use a calculator, so focus on understanding the methods rather than complex calculations!

Reading tables correctly is a skill that'll serve you well across all your subjects. This question tests whether you can extract information from a simple two-way table about pupils' eye colours.
You need to work out what different numbers represent by adding up rows, columns, or the whole table. For instance, adding all the girls gives you total girls, whilst adding everything gives you the total class size.
The key is being methodical - don't rush and double-check your additions. These data handling skills are essential for statistics work in later years.
Quick Check: Always verify your answers make sense - if you get 50 pupils in a typical class, something's probably wrong!

Understanding quadrilaterals and their properties is crucial for geometry. A shape with four equal angles means each angle is 90°, so you're looking at rectangles or squares.
When you need a four-sided shape without four equal angles, you've got loads of options - parallelograms, trapeziums, or irregular quadrilaterals all work perfectly.
The dot grid helps you create accurate shapes, so use it to your advantage. Count carefully to ensure your angles are what you intended.
Shape Tip: Remember that squares and rectangles both have four equal angles, but only squares have four equal sides too!

Units and measurements connect maths to everyday life, making them super practical to master. A mouse weighs about 30 grams - roughly the same as a small chocolate bar.
Water bottles typically hold 1 litre, which is perfect for staying hydrated during school. Front doors are usually around 200cm tall - that's about 2 metres, or roughly the height of a tall person.
Getting a feel for these real-world measurements helps you spot silly mistakes in calculations. If your answer suggests a mouse weighs 30 kilograms, you know something's gone wrong!
Memory Trick: A litre of water weighs about 1 kilogram - handy for checking if your answers make sense!

Function machines help you understand how numbers transform through different operations. You're working backwards and forwards to find missing values in the sequence.
Start with what you know and work step-by-step through each operation. If you multiply by 2 then add something to get from 10 to 40, think about what makes sense mathematically.
These skills are building blocks for algebra - you're essentially solving equations without realizing it! The more comfortable you get with number relationships, the easier algebra becomes.
Strategy: Work backwards from the final answer if you're stuck - sometimes it's clearer that way!

Spatial reasoning is like a mental workout for your brain! You need to imagine rotating and viewing cube arrangements from different angles.
Look for patterns in how the cubes are connected and positioned. The challenge is making both arrangements identical by shading just one extra cube in each pair.
This type of 3D thinking is brilliant preparation for design technology, art, and even subjects like chemistry where you need to visualise molecular structures.
Visual Tip: Try tilting your head or the paper to see the shapes from different angles - it really helps!

Estimation skills are incredibly useful in real life - from calculating tips to checking if shop prices make sense. You can see that the shaded area contains 200 seats around part of the tennis court.
Look at what fraction of the total seating area is shaded, then scale up proportionally. If the shaded bit looks like about a quarter of the total, multiply 200 by 4.
Proportional reasoning like this helps you make quick, sensible estimates without needing exact calculations. It's a skill employers really value!
Real-World Connection: This is exactly how you'd estimate crowd sizes at concerts or sports events!

Mental arithmetic becomes much easier when you spot patterns in numbers. For multiplication, think about factors and how numbers relate to each other.
Decimal number lines help you understand values between whole numbers. The key is recognizing that 1.5 is halfway between 1 and 2, whilst 0.65 sits between 0.6 and 0.7.
These skills build your number confidence enormously. When you can work comfortably with decimals and multiplication without a calculator, more complex maths becomes much less intimidating.
Pattern Spotting: Look for relationships like doubling, halving, or adding/subtracting the same amount!

Technical drawing skills are essential for many careers, from architecture to engineering. You need to create a paper strip that covers exactly four faces of a 2cm cube.
Think about how the faces connect when you unfold a cube - this is called a net. Your strip needs to be 2cm wide and long enough to cover four connected faces.
Use the centimetre grid to ensure your drawing is accurate. Measure twice, draw once - precision matters in technical subjects and will serve you well in science practicals too.
Visualisation Help: Try imagining wrapping a present - how would you cut the paper to cover just four sides?
