Ever wondered why some square roots like โ9 = 3 are neat and tidy, whilst others like โ3 give you endless decimals? Surds are those awkward square roots that produce irrational numbers - basically numbers that go on forever without a pattern.
The brilliant thing about surds is that they follow simple rules. When multiplying surds, you use โa ร โb = โab. So โ3 ร โ6 = โ18. When dividing surds, it's โa รท โb = โa/b. And here's a handy one: when you square a surd like (โ5)ยฒ, it just becomes the number inside - so (โ5)ยฒ = 5.
Simplifying surds is where things get interesting. You can break down โ28 into โ4 ร โ7, and since โ4 = 2, you get 2โ7. This is much tidier! Always look for square numbers (1, 4, 9, 16, 25...) that divide into your surd.
Quick Check: If your final answer doesn't contain a surd symbol, double-check your working - you might have missed something!
Adding surds isn't as simple as just adding the numbers inside - you need to make sure they're "like terms" first, just like in algebra. Think of it as collecting like terms: you can add 3โ2 + 4โ2, but you can't directly add โ3 + โ5.
Here's the method that'll save you loads of time: first, simplify each surd by finding the largest square number that divides into it. For โ18, you'd spot that 9 goes into 18, giving you 3โ2. For โ32, you'd use 16 to get 4โ2.
Now you can add them easily: 3โ2 + 4โ2 = 7โ2. The numbers outside the surd sign add up (3 + 4 = 7), whilst the โ2 part stays the same. Remember, if there's no number in front of a surd, it's actually 1โ - so โ2 + 3โ2 = 4โ2.
Pro Tip: Write out the first 10 square numbers (1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100) at the top of your page - they're your best friends for simplifying surds quickly!
