This is a Pearson Edexcel GCSE Mathematics Foundation Tier exam... Show more

Exam basics: You've got 90 minutes to tackle this Foundation Tier paper without a calculator. The paper's worth 80 marks total, so you can roughly spend about a minute per mark.
Essential kit: Bring a ruler, protractor, compass, pens, HB pencil, and eraser. You'll get a formula sheet too, which is brilliant for remembering those tricky formulas under pressure.
Top strategy: The marks for each question are shown in brackets - use this as your time guide. A 1-mark question shouldn't take as long as a 4-mark one!
Remember: All diagrams aren't drawn to scale unless stated otherwise, so don't rely on measuring with your eye.

Starting simple: These opening questions test fundamental skills like converting decimals to fractions (0.3 = 3/10), calculating powers (3² = 9), and using order of operations for 20 ÷ (3+2).
Factor knowledge: You'll need to identify factors of numbers. For 60, you're looking for a number between 8 and 14 that divides evenly into 60 (like 10 or 12).
These questions are worth 1 mark each, so they should be quick wins. Don't overthink them - trust your basic maths knowledge and move on confidently.
Pro tip: Always show your working, even for simple calculations. It could save you marks if you make a small error.

Algebraic simplification: When you see 3 × w × 5 × t, multiply the numbers together and arrange the letters alphabetically: 15wt. It's that straightforward!
Multi-step word problems: Fay's theme park question tests your ability to handle real-world calculations. Break it down step by step: petrol (£23), adult ticket (£33), children's tickets (2 × £24.50), adult meal (£15), children's meals (2 × £10).
Add everything up, then subtract from her £200 budget. These problems look scary but they're just addition and subtraction dressed up in a story.
Money matters: Always double-check your arithmetic in money questions - they're easy marks to lose through simple calculation errors.

Mode and probability: The mode is simply the most frequent value in your data set. For probability, count how many times each outcome appears and divide by the total number of items.
Solving equations: For m - 3 = 4, just add 3 to both sides to get m = 7. For 3n + n = 24, combine like terms first , then divide both sides by 4.
Probability scales: When marking probability on a scale from 0 to 1, think about fractions. If 2 out of 8 letters are B, that's 2/8 = 1/4 = 0.25 on your scale.
Equation solving: Whatever you do to one side of an equation, you must do to the other side too.

Angle relationships: This question tests your knowledge of angle properties in geometric shapes. You'll need to identify what type of angle relationship you're dealing with.
Look for clues like parallel lines, triangles, or straight lines. The 70° angle given is your starting point - use angle rules to find the value of y.
Common angle rules include: angles on a straight line add to 180°, angles in a triangle add to 180°, and alternate angles are equal when you have parallel lines.
Show your reasoning: Don't just give the answer - explain which angle rule you've used to get full marks.

Division with remainders: To find how many £4 jars Michael can buy with £23, divide 23 by 4. You get 5 remainder 3, so he can buy 5 jars (not 5.75 jars!).
Half-price logic: When jars cost £2 each (half of £4), work out how many he can actually buy: 23 ÷ 2 = 11.5, so 11 jars maximum.
Testing assumptions: Michael thinks he can buy twice as many (10 jars), but he can actually buy 11. His assumption is wrong, and you need to explain why with calculations.
Real-world maths: Remember you can't buy half a jar - always round down for "how many can you buy" questions.

Enlargements: Compare corresponding sides to find the scale factor. If triangle B's sides are twice as long as triangle A's, the scale factor is 2.
Centre of enlargement: Draw lines from corresponding points on both triangles - where they meet is your centre. It's like finding where all the "zoom lines" come together.
Reflections: The mirror line sits exactly halfway between corresponding points on the original and reflected shapes. For the equation, look at whether it's horizontal or vertical .
Use tracing paper: If you're struggling to spot transformations, trace one shape and see how it moves to become the other.

Multiple time calculations: Elena's 120 minutes get split several ways. Swimming takes 1/6 × 120 = 20 minutes. The gym takes 20% × 120 = 24 minutes.
Working backwards: Badminton (50) + swimming (20) + gym (24) = 94 minutes used. So cafe time = 120 - 94 = 26 minutes.
Time logic: If she arrived at 1.30pm and needed 94 minutes for activities, she reached the cafe at 1.30pm + 94 minutes = 3.04pm. She's 4 minutes late for her 3pm meeting!
Convert carefully: Make sure all your time units match - don't mix minutes and hours without converting properly.

Reading bar charts: Composite bar charts stack different categories on top of each other. Read the values carefully by looking at where each section starts and ends.
Finding differences: To find just the children in 2010, subtract the bottom of the children section from the top. Don't include the men and women sections below.
Ratios: For 2020 data, count children separately, then add men and women together. Express as a simplified ratio like 2:3 or 5:7.
Take your time: Bar charts can be tricky to read accurately. Use a ruler to line up with the scale if needed.

Distance formula: Use Distance = Speed × Time. Jenny drives at 54 mph for 1½ hours, so distance = 54 × 1.5 = 81 miles.
Map scales: A 1:25000 scale means 1 cm on the map equals 25,000 cm in real life. So 6 cm represents 6 × 25,000 = 150,000 cm.
Unit conversion: Convert 150,000 cm to kilometres by dividing by 100 (to get metres): 1,500 m, then dividing by 1,000 (to get km): 1.5 km.
Scale calculations: Always convert to the units asked for in the question - don't leave your answer in centimetres when they want kilometres!
