This is a GCSE Mathematics Higher Tier Paper 1 (non-calculator)... Show more

You'll be sitting a non-calculator paper, so mental maths and written methods are crucial here. The exam lasts 90 minutes and you'll need basic equipment like a ruler, protractor, compass, and pencil.
Remember that all working must be shown - even if you get the right answer, you won't get full marks without clear steps. The marks in brackets tell you how much time to spend on each question, which is brilliant for time management.
Top Tip: Use the mark allocation as your guide - if a question is worth 3 marks, expect to show 3 clear steps in your working.

These decimal multiplication and division problems test your written methods without a calculator. For 3.67 × 4.2, you'd use the standard column method, being careful with decimal places.
Division like 59.84 ÷ 1.6 becomes easier if you multiply both numbers by 10 to get 598.4 ÷ 16. This eliminates the decimal in the divisor and makes long division much simpler.
Quick Check: Count decimal places in multiplication - 3.67 (2 places) × 4.2 (1 place) = answer with 3 decimal places.

The Venn diagram question uses set notation where ℰ represents all even numbers less than 19. You'll need to place numbers in the correct regions - some belong to both sets A and B (the overlap), others to just one set.
Mixed number subtraction like 4⅕ - 2⅔ requires converting to improper fractions with a common denominator. Convert both fractions to fifteenths, subtract, then convert back to a mixed number.
Remember: For Venn diagrams, start with the intersection (numbers in both sets), then fill the remaining regions.

This percentage problem compares house values after different changes. Tamara's £220,000 house decreases by 20%, whilst Rahim's £160,000 house increases by 30%.
Calculate each new value separately: Tamara's becomes £220,000 × 0.8 = £176,000, and Rahim's becomes £160,000 × 1.3 = £208,000. Clear working is essential to show your method.
Key Point: Decreasing by 20% means multiplying by 0.8; increasing by 30% means multiplying by 1.3.

This ratio question gives you the relationship 4:7:15 for Rosie, Matilda, and Ibrahim's stickers. You're told Ibrahim has 24 more than Matilda, which helps you find the multiplier for the ratio.
Since the ratio difference between Matilda and Ibrahim is 15 - 7 = 8 parts, and this equals 24 stickers, each part represents 3 stickers. You can then work out exactly how many more stickers Ibrahim has than Rosie.
Strategy: Find what one part of the ratio represents, then use this to answer the question.

This 3D shape problem involves a triangular prism with a right-angled triangle cross-section. You're given the volume (750 cm³), length (25 cm), and base (5 cm), and need to find the height.
Use the volume formula: Volume = cross-sectional area × length. The cross-sectional area is ½ × base × height for a triangle, so you can work backwards from the given volume to find the missing height.
Formula Focus: Volume of prism = area of cross-section × length of prism.

This algebraic geometry problem equates the surface area of a cube (6x²) with a sphere's surface area (4πr²). With the sphere's radius being 3 cm, you substitute to get 4π(3)² = 36π.
Setting 6x² = 36π and solving gives x² = 6π, so x = √(6π). This shows that k = 6, proving the required form x = √(kπ).
Key Insight: Surface area of cube = 6 × (side length)², surface area of sphere = 4πr².

The quadratic equation x² = 5x + 24 rearranges to x² - 5x - 24 = 0. Factor this or use the quadratic formula to find x = 8 or x = -3.
Index laws are tested through several parts: 7⁰ = 1, 3 × 3⁶ × 3⁻⁶ = 3¹ = 3, 2⁻⁴ = 1/16, and 27^(1/3) = 3. Remember that negative indices mean reciprocals and fractional indices mean roots.
Index Rules: Any number to the power 0 equals 1; negative powers give fractions; fractional powers give roots.

This estimation problem involves 6 identical squares with total area 5406 cm². Since each square has area 5406 ÷ 6 = 901 cm², you need the square root of 901.
The square root of 901 is approximately 30 . Your estimate will be slightly high because 901 > 900, making this an overestimate.
Estimation Tip: Use perfect squares you know well to estimate square roots of nearby numbers.

This algebra with area question sets two rectangular areas equal. Rectangle A has area 6 and rectangle B has area 7w.
Setting them equal: 6 = 7w. Expand both sides, collect terms with y, then rearrange to make y the subject. This gives you an expression for y in terms of w.
Method: Expand, collect like terms, then rearrange to isolate the required variable.
