These GCSE maths notes cover the essential topics you'll need... Show more

You're tackling Higher tier Edexcel maths - which means you're already showing serious commitment to your mathematical journey. This level opens doors to A-levels and beyond, so every concept you master here is building your future.
The topics ahead might seem overwhelming at first, but remember that each one connects to the others. Once you get the hang of angle properties, trigonometry becomes much clearer. Master basic algebra, and graphs start making perfect sense.
Top Tip: Keep your notes organised by topic and always write down the reasoning for your answers - it's often worth more marks than you think!

Angle facts are your mathematical foundation, and they're surprisingly straightforward once you get them. Acute angles are less than 90°, right angles equal exactly 90°, obtuse angles are between 90° and 180°, and reflex angles are over 180°.
When dealing with parallel lines, remember that alternate angles are equal, corresponding angles are equal, and co-interior angles add up to 180°. These rules are absolute - they work every single time.
Here's the crucial bit: you must always write down your reasons when solving angle problems. Without showing why alternate angles are equal or why angles on a straight line sum to 180°, you'll lose marks even if your answer is correct.
Exam Warning: You can only get a maximum of 3 marks without writing proper reasoning for parallel line questions!

Polygons are just shapes with straight sides, and each one has a specific name. Triangle (3 sides), quadrilateral (4), pentagon (5), hexagon (6), heptagon (7), octagon (8), nonagon (9), and decagon (10) - knowing these names saves time in exams.
Exterior angles always add up to 360° for any polygon. To find one exterior angle in a regular polygon, just divide 360° by the number of sides. So for a regular pentagon: 360° ÷ 5 = 72°.
Interior angles can be found using the formula × 180°, where n is the number of sides. Remember that interior and exterior angles are always supplementary - they add up to 180°.
Quick Check: If you know the interior angle is 108°, the exterior angle must be 72° (180° - 108°), which means it's a pentagon!

Expanding brackets is like being a mathematical distributor - everything outside the brackets gets multiplied by everything inside. It's actually quite satisfying once you get the rhythm.
For example: 5 becomes 5x - 15, and 2x becomes 2x² + 8x. The key is methodical multiplication and remembering your indices laws when dealing with powers.
When you're subtracting expanded brackets, be extra careful with the signs. In 4 - 3, that minus sign in front of the second bracket flips all the signs inside it.
Memory Trick: Think of the number outside as a boss giving orders to everyone inside the brackets - no one gets left out!

Pythagoras' theorem is your go-to tool for right-angled triangles, and it's been helping students for over 2,000 years. The hypotenuse (longest side, opposite the right angle) follows the rule a² + b² = c².
When you're finding the hypotenuse, add the squares of the two shorter sides, then square root your answer. If you're finding a shorter side, subtract one square from the hypotenuse squared, then square root.
For example, with sides 6cm and 8cm: 6² + 8² = 36 + 64 = 100, so the hypotenuse is √100 = 10cm. It's that straightforward.
Key Limitation: This only works in right-angled triangles - if there's no right angle, you'll need trigonometry or other methods.

Trigonometry opens up a whole new world of triangle problem-solving, and it starts with understanding SOHCAHTOA. This isn't just a random word - it's your key to every trig problem.
SOH means Sin = Opposite/Hypotenuse, CAH means Cos = Adjacent/Hypotenuse, and TOA means Tan = Opposite/Adjacent. Once you can identify which sides you have and which you need, choosing the right ratio becomes automatic.
For finding angles, you'll need the inverse functions (sin⁻¹, cos⁻¹, tan⁻¹) which you access using the shift button on your calculator. These give you the angle when you know the ratio.
Calculator Tip: Always check your calculator is in degree mode, not radians, unless specifically told otherwise!

Exact trigonometry values pop up in non-calculator papers, so memorise the key ones: sin 30° = 1/2, cos 60° = 1/2, sin 45° = cos 45° = √2/2, and tan 45° = 1.
The sine rule and cosine rule extend trigonometry beyond right-angled triangles. Use the sine rule when you have two angles and one side, or two sides and one non-included angle.
The cosine rule is perfect when you know all three sides (to find an angle) or two sides and the included angle (to find the third side). The area formula ½ × a × b × sin C is incredibly useful too.
Strategy Tip: For any triangle problem, first check if it's right-angled (use Pythagoras or SOHCAHTOA), then consider sine or cosine rules.

Graph recognition is a crucial skill that comes up constantly in GCSE maths. Linear graphs (straight lines) follow y = mx + c, where m is the gradient and c is the y-intercept.
Quadratic graphs create U-shaped or upside-down U-shaped curves called parabolas, following y = ax² + bx + c. Cubic graphs have x³ terms and create more complex S-shaped curves with multiple turning points.
Exponential graphs show rapid growth or decay , while reciprocal graphs have asymptotes - lines they approach but never touch.
Plotting Trick: Always create a table of values first, plot carefully, then join with smooth curves .

Your calculator is a powerful tool, but only if you know how to use it properly. Always follow BIDMAS order: Brackets, Indices, Divide, Multiply, Add, Subtract.
Significant figures often catch students out. Remember that 1500 to 1 sf is 2000, and 0.00324 to 2 sf is 0.0032. Count from the first non-zero digit.
When dealing with negative numbers and powers, always use brackets: (-3)² gives 9, but -3² gives -9. The shift button accesses second functions like sin⁻¹, while the format button converts between fractions and decimals.
Essential Habit: Always double-check your calculator is in the right mode (usually 'Calculate' for GCSE) and that your answer makes sense in context.

Circle calculations revolve around just a few key formulas, but they're incredibly versatile. The circumference is πd (or 2πr), and the area is πr².
For sectors (pizza slice shapes), the area formula is × πr², and arc length is × πd. These proportional formulas make perfect sense - you're just finding what fraction of the full circle you're dealing with.
Learn the vocabulary: radius (centre to edge), diameter (all the way across), chord (straight line between two points on the circle), tangent (line touching the circle once), sector (pizza slice), and segment (area cut off by a chord).
Memory Aid: Think of sectors as pizza slices and segments as the crusts you might cut off - it helps visualise what you're calculating!
