A Level Maths Year 1/AS Essential Topics
Pure Mathematics forms the foundation of your A Level journey, starting with the basics you'll build everything else upon. Surds and indices might seem straightforward, but they're crucial for later topics like logarithms and exponential functions. You'll also master algebraic expressions and equations and inequalities, which pop up everywhere in maths.
The visual side of maths becomes important with sketching graphs and transformations of functions. These skills help you understand how functions behave and change - something that's absolutely essential for calculus later on. Coordinate geometry and circle equations bring together algebra and geometry in ways that feel much more concrete than pure algebra.
Calculus makes its first appearance with differentiation from first principles and basic integration. Don't worry if it feels overwhelming at first - everyone struggles with calculus initially! Focus on understanding stationary points and finding tangents and normals, as these concepts appear in countless exam questions.
Quick Tip: Master the fundamentals in Pure Maths first - they're the building blocks for everything else in Year 2.
