This is your complete guide to OCR's A Level Law... Show more

OCR is one of the UK's leading exam boards, part of Cambridge Assessment Group - so you're getting a qualification that's properly recognised and respected. This A Level Law specification has been designed with input from teachers and universities to make sure it's relevant and engaging.
The course aims to develop your knowledge of the English legal system and both private and public law. You'll learn legal method and reasoning - basically how lawyers and judges think through problems. This isn't just about memorising laws; you'll develop critical thinking skills that are valuable in loads of careers.
Key features include a straightforward assessment structure, specialist support resources, and the chance to specialise in either human rights law or contract law. The specification is designed to be teacher-friendly and accessible, so your lessons should be engaging rather than overwhelming.
Quick Tip: This qualification is accredited by Ofqual , which means it's officially recognised by universities and employers.

If your teachers have taught the old OCR A Level Law before, there are some important changes they'll help you navigate. The good news is that lots stays the same - assessment is still at the end of the course, and you'll still study the English legal system plus substantive law areas.
The main changes involve assessment structure: you'll now take three exams of two hours each, rather than the previous format. The assessment styles are more consistent across all components, with shorter questions that are easier to tackle.
Content-wise, you'll study three main areas of substantive law: criminal law, law of tort, and either contract law or the new human rights law option. This gives you a solid foundation across different legal areas.
The twelve-month rule is worth remembering - you won't be tested on legal changes that came into effect in the twelve months before your exam. This means you can focus on established law rather than worrying about brand-new developments.
Study Smart: The consistent assessment style across all three papers means once you've mastered the question formats, you can apply the same techniques throughout.

Your A Level Law consists of three equally-weighted components, each worth 33.3% of your total grade. Component 01 covers the legal system and criminal law, Component 02 focuses on law making and tort law, and Component 03 is further law including your chosen specialisation.
Each component includes synoptic assessment - this means you'll need to make connections between different areas of law you've studied. It's not just about isolated knowledge; you'll demonstrate how different legal concepts work together.
The legal system content is spread across all three papers: civil and criminal courts in Component 01, law making processes in Component 02, and the nature of law in Component 03. Together, these sections make up 25% of your overall qualification.
Your substantive law studies will cover criminal law (75 marks), tort law (75 marks), and either human rights law or contract law (75 marks). This gives you a comprehensive understanding of both public law (criminal) and private law areas.
Exam Strategy: With 100 marks available in each 2-hour paper, you'll have plenty of time to show your knowledge - that's roughly 1.2 minutes per mark.

This section introduces you to how the English legal system actually works - the courts, the people, and the processes that make law happen in practice. You'll explore both civil and criminal courts, understanding when cases go where and why the system is structured as it is.
Legal professions form a key part of this topic. You'll learn about barristers, solicitors, and judges - what they do, how they're trained, and how the profession is changing. This isn't just academic; it's practical insight into potential career paths.
Access to justice is a crucial concept you'll examine. This covers how ordinary people can actually use the legal system - legal aid, alternative dispute resolution, and the barriers that might prevent people from getting justice. It's where law meets real-world social issues.
The changing nature of the legal system means you'll consider how courts and legal processes adapt to new challenges. Think about how technology is changing legal practice, or how Brexit has affected our legal system.
Real-World Connection: Every legal drama you've watched becomes more interesting once you understand how courts actually work and who does what!

Criminal law is where you'll learn about offences, defences, and what makes someone criminally liable. This section starts with the general elements - actus reus (the guilty act) and mens rea (the guilty mind). These Latin terms might seem intimidating, but they're just the building blocks of criminal responsibility.
Offences against the person covers everything from common assault to murder. You'll study fatal offences like murder and manslaughter, understanding the precise legal definitions and how courts distinguish between them. Non-fatal offences include various forms of assault and battery under different Acts.
Property offences focus on theft, robbery, and burglary under the Theft Act 1968. You'll learn the specific elements that prosecutors must prove for each offence - it's more technical than you might expect from watching crime shows.
Defences are equally important - self-defence, duress, insanity, automatism, and consent. These show how the law recognises that sometimes there are good reasons why someone might commit what would otherwise be a crime. You'll also explore mental capacity defences and how the law deals with people who may not be fully responsible for their actions.
Case Study Focus: Criminal law comes alive through real cases - you'll see how legal principles apply to actual situations and understand why precise definitions matter so much.
