While + clause relates an activity that occurs at the same-time as

While: Tiempo y Contraste

While es súper útil para conectar dos acciones que pasan al mismo tiempo. Piénsalo como el "mientras" en español - une actividades simultáneas donde una suele ser el trasfondo de la otra.

Tiene dos usos principales: mostrar tiempo simultáneo ("While he was talking, he was holding his baby") y contraste ("While some fathers feel awkward, he doesn't"). En el primer caso, las dos acciones ocurren juntas; en el segundo, while significa "aunque" o "mientras que".

La clave está en que after while normalmente usas verbos que expresan duración - acciones que se prolongan en el tiempo, no momentos puntuales.

💡 Truco: Si puedes reemplazar "while" por "when" sin cambiar el sentido, estás hablando de tiempo. Si suena mejor "although", es contraste.

Cuándo Usar el Infinitivo $to + verb$

El infinitivo se usa en situaciones específicas que puedes memorizar fácilmente. Siempre va después de ciertos verbos como forget, help, choose, expect, promise y decide ("I forgot to close the window").

También aparece después de adjetivos como happy, sad, surprised ("I was happy to help them"). Esto incluye construcciones con "too + adjective" ("too cold to swim") y "adjective + enough" ("strong enough to lift it").

Usa el infinitivo para responder "why" - para expresar propósito ("Why did you stop? To spend time with family").

Cuándo Usar el Gerundio $-ing$

El gerundio tiene tres usos principales que son bastante lógicos. Primero, cuando el verbo actúa como sujeto de la oración $"Swimming is good exercise" - nadar es el tema principal$ .

Segundo, siempre después de preposiciones $"I look forward to meeting you" - after "to" como preposición$ . Tercero, después de verbos específicos como enjoy, avoid, mind, finish y give up ("I dislike getting up early").

Los verbos más comunes con gerundio incluyen: like, love, hate, enjoy, miss, mind, finish, practise, suggest, can't help, admit, avoid, consider. Memoriza esta lista porque aparece constantemente.

Verbos que Cambian de Significado

Algunos verbos son tramposos porque cambian completamente de significado según uses infinitivo o gerundio. Con stop: "I stopped to have a beer" (paré para tomar una cerveza) vs "I stopped drinking beer" (dejé de beber cerveza).

Try también cambia: "tried to lift" (intenté algo difícil) vs "try closing the window" (prueba a ver si funciona). Con remember/forget: infinitivo para cosas que debes hacer, gerundio para memorias del pasado.

Need es especial: "I need to work" (tengo que trabajar) vs "This room needs painting" $esta habitación necesita ser pintada - voz pasiva$ .

💡 Súper importante: Estos verbos aparecen mucho en exámenes. Practica con ejemplos hasta que el cambio de significado te suene natural.

Go On: Continuar vs Cambiar

Go on merece atención especial porque es muy común pero confuso. Con infinitivo expresa cambio de actividad: "After winning the Cup, Valencia went on to win the Champions League" (pasaron a ganar otra cosa diferente).

Con gerundio significa continuar la misma actividad: "They went on complaining all evening" $siguieron quejándose - la misma acción$ . Esta diferencia es clave para sonar natural en inglés.

La lógica es simple: infinitivo = nueva actividad, gerundio = misma actividad continúa.

💡 Tip de memoria: Piensa "go on TO something new" vs "go on DOING the same thing". Te ayudará a elegir la forma correcta automáticamente.
