Getting Into Vietnam

Ever wondered how America ended up fighting a war halfway around the world? It all started with the Domino Theory - the idea that if Vietnam fell to communism, other countries would follow like falling dominoes.

North Vietnam had everything going for it: a popular leader called Ho Chi Minh and backing from powerful communist China. Meanwhile, South Vietnam was capitalist (which America loved) but had a major problem - their leader Ngo Dinh Diem was absolutely hated by his own people. He persecuted Buddhists, was corrupt, and gave important jobs to his family instead of qualified people.

The Gulf of Tonkin incident in 1964 changed everything. When North Vietnamese forces allegedly attacked American warships, President Johnson got permission from Congress to escalate the conflict. By June 1965, there were 184,000 US troops in Vietnam - but North Vietnam responded by sending even more soldiers south, creating a deadly stalemate.

Remember: The second Gulf of Tonkin attack probably never happened, but it gave America the excuse to go to full-scale war.

Fighting an Invisible Enemy

Imagine fighting an enemy you can't even identify - that's exactly what American soldiers faced with guerrilla warfare. The Viet Cong completely changed the rules of combat, and it drove the Americans mad.

Guerrilla tactics included deadly booby traps like punji stakes, surprise ambushes from the jungle, and the genius move of using women and children as fighters. The Americans never knew if that innocent-looking villager was actually planning to blow them up. This invisible war meant traditional military tactics were useless.

The jungle became the Viet Cong's greatest weapon. They knew every inch of it, used it for cover, and built complex tunnel systems underneath it. American soldiers, trained for conventional warfare, struggled desperately in this hostile environment.

Key Point: Guerrilla warfare works because it turns everyone into a potential enemy - there's no clear battle line or uniformed opponent to fight.

Chemical Warfare and Bombing Campaigns

When you can't see your enemy, what do you do? Destroy their hiding places. America's answer was to unleash chemical hell on Vietnam's countryside.

Operation Ranch Hand (1962) sprayed Agent Orange across 3.6 million acres of Vietnamese jungle and farmland. The goal was simple: remove the forest cover so Viet Cong bases would be exposed. But Agent Orange contained dioxin, a poison that caused birth defects and cancer for generations.

Operation Rolling Thunder (1965-1968) was even more brutal - a non-stop bombing campaign that dropped 864,000 tons of bombs on North Vietnam. The Americans thought they could bomb the North into submission, but it backfired spectacularly.

The bombing killed 52,000 North Vietnamese civilians but barely dented their war effort. Most people lived in rural areas, so destroying cities didn't matter much. Worse still, it made the Vietnamese more determined to resist American invasion.

Shocking Fact: America dropped more bombs on Vietnam than it used in all of World War II, yet still couldn't win the war.

The Tet Offensive: Changing Everything

January 1968 brought the Tet Offensive - the moment that changed American public opinion forever. During Vietnam's most important holiday, when everyone expected peace, the Viet Cong launched coordinated attacks across South Vietnam.

Viet Cong fighters disguised as civilians infiltrated major cities, even breaking into the US embassy in Saigon. They held the ancient city of Hue for nearly a month. American TV viewers watched in horror as their "winning" army scrambled to respond to surprise attacks.

Militarily, America won - they pushed back the communist forces and regained control. But the media coverage was devastating. Americans saw their soldiers retreating, their embassy under attack, and realised their government had been lying about progress in the war.

The offensive cost between 30,000-50,000 Vietnamese lives compared to just over 1,000 Americans. Yet it was a massive propaganda victory for North Vietnam because it shattered American confidence in the war effort.

Media Impact: For the first time, Americans watched a war unfold on television, seeing the brutal reality their government tried to hide.

Key Players and Operations

Several important figures shaped America's early involvement in Vietnam. President Kennedy launched Operation Beef Up, increasing US troops from 3,000 to 17,000 between 1961-1963. He supported Diem's government through various programmes.

The Strategic Hamlet Program tried to protect Vietnamese villagers by moving them into fortified villages, hoping to cut off Viet Cong support. Green Berets trained South Vietnamese forces in counter-guerrilla tactics, while Civilian Irregular Defense Groups attempted to win over mountain tribes.

Everything changed when Diem was assassinated in November 1963 by his own generals. His anti-Buddhist policies had become so extreme that monks were setting themselves on fire in protest. Kennedy had already cut support for Diem, knowing he couldn't unite South Vietnam.

The Geneva Accords of 1955 had originally split Vietnam temporarily, promising elections in 1956 to reunite the country. America prevented these elections because they knew Ho Chi Minh would win easily.

Critical Point: America's support for an unpopular dictator in South Vietnam undermined their claim to be fighting for freedom and democracy.

# Vietnam war

Why was the USA getting increasingly involved in Vietnam?

The USA believed in the idea of Domino Theory which was the idea t

Nixon's Strategy: Vietnamisation

By 1968, America desperately needed an exit strategy. President Nixon promised "peace with honour" through a policy called Vietnamisation - gradually replacing American troops with South Vietnamese forces while providing military equipment and support.

Nixon's plan seemed to work initially. US troop numbers fell from 538,700 in 1969 to 334,600 by 1970, while South Vietnamese forces grew to nearly 1 million soldiers. America would provide the weapons and training; Vietnam would provide the soldiers.

But serious problems emerged quickly. The South Vietnamese army (ARVN) suffered from corruption, poor leadership, and low morale. They relied heavily on American air support and couldn't match the determination of North Vietnamese forces.

Operation Menu saw Nixon secretly bombing Cambodia to disrupt communist supply lines. When this became public in 1970, it triggered massive anti-war protests across America. The war was spreading, not ending.

Reality Check: Vietnamisation failed because you can't create motivation and fighting spirit through training and equipment alone.

# Vietnam war

Why was the USA getting increasingly involved in Vietnam?

The USA believed in the idea of Domino Theory which was the idea t

Expanding the War

Nixon's attempts to strengthen America's position led to dangerous escalation. The invasion of Cambodia in 1970 and Operation Lam Son 719 in Laos (1971) aimed to cut communist supply routes and destroy bases.

These operations backfired spectacularly. The Laos invasion ended in defeat and heavy casualties for South Vietnamese forces. Meanwhile, the Easter Offensive of 1972 saw North Vietnamese forces launch massive attacks across South Vietnam, killing over 100,000 soldiers.

Operation Linebacker was America's response - intensive bombing that finally forced North Vietnam back to peace talks. The offensive proved that Vietnamisation couldn't work because South Vietnam remained completely dependent on American air power.

The pattern was clear: every time America tried to reduce its involvement, South Vietnam's weaknesses became obvious. The ARVN couldn't fight effectively without massive American support, making true withdrawal impossible.

Strategic Failure: Nixon's expansion of the war into Cambodia and Laos made the conflict more unpopular at home while failing to achieve military objectives.

The End: Peace and Defeat

Peace talks in Paris finally produced an agreement in 1973. America would withdraw all troops, both sides would respect the border between North and South Vietnam, and the countries would work toward peaceful reunification. It sounded reasonable, but nobody intended to keep these promises.

The moment American forces left, North Vietnam began planning its final offensive. Without American air support and military aid, South Vietnam's army collapsed quickly. The fall of Saigon in 1975 saw desperate scenes of American helicopters evacuating people from embassy rooftops.

The human cost was staggering: 58,000 American deaths and approximately 2 million Vietnamese casualties. Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos all fell under communist control - exactly what the Domino Theory had predicted and America had fought to prevent.

The war's legacy changed America forever. It created deep mistrust of government, showed the limits of military power, and demonstrated how public opinion could force policy changes in a democracy.

Final Irony: After spending over a decade and thousands of lives fighting communism in Vietnam, America eventually normalised relations with communist Vietnam in the 1990s.

This app has made me feel so much more confident in my exam prep, not only through boosting my own self confidence through the features that allow you to connect with others and feel less alone, but also through the way the app itself is centred around making you feel better. It is easy to navigate, fun to use, and helpful to anyone struggling in absolutely any way.

The app's just great! All I have to do is enter the topic in the search bar and I get the response real fast. I don't have to watch 10 YouTube videos to understand something, so I'm saving my time. Highly recommended!

I know a lot of apps use fake accounts to boost their reviews but this app deserves it all. Originally I was getting 4 in my English exams and this time I got a grade 7. I didn’t even know about this app three days until the exam and it has helped A LOT. Please actually trust me and use it as I’m sure you too will see developments.
