Powers of the King and the Witan
Being king in medieval England meant having incredible power that touched every aspect of people's lives. The king controlled money by deciding how coins were made and distributed throughout the kingdom. He could also raise the fyrd army and fleet whenever England faced threats, giving him complete military authority.
Religion played a massive role in royal power too. People believed the king was chosen by God to lead them, which made opposing the king almost like opposing God himself. The king was also the only person who could make new laws, and everyone in the kingdom had to follow them without question.
However, kings didn't rule completely alone. The Witan was a council that advised the king on important decisions. But here's the catch – the Witan's power was pretty limited because the king controlled everything about it. He decided who got appointed to the Witan, what topics they could advise him on, and whether he'd actually follow their advice.
Remember: Even though the Witan existed, medieval English kings had almost absolute power compared to modern leaders.
