Hippocrates ideas about cause of illness/disease 

The theory that if our humours were out of balance we would become ill. This consisted of blood,yellow bile, black bile and phlegm. 

How did people 'treat' out balanced humours?

The Hippocratic oath - This meant that doctors promised to do everything they could to keep their patient out of harms way (an oath still used today during doctor training)

The theory that if you felt a certain way when ill you would have to make yourself feel the opposite to heal yourself. For example if you were cold and had chills you would need a warm bath.

Some medieval people believes that the alignment of the planets could make you sick if they were out of place.

Other ideas about cause of disease to do with astrology 

Diseases were sent as a punishment from god due to sins.

Individuals, the church, attitudes & beliefs, lack of science and lack of government influence.

Balancing - e.g cold drinks for hot fever or fire for chills

remove teeth or amputate limbs (not using anaesthetic resulting in serious blood loss)

Praying to god for forgiveness when you sin

Cleaning the streets and quarantines for the infected 

Not allowing strangers into towns/villages
