Human Lifespan Development Overview
Ever wondered why you're so different from when you were little, or how you'll change as you get older? Human lifespan development tracks how we grow physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially through distinct life stages.
There are six main life stages you'll study: infancy 0−2years, early childhood 3−8years, adolescence 9−18years, early adulthood 19−45years, middle adulthood 46−65years, and later adulthood 65+years. Each stage brings unique challenges and developmental milestones that shape who we become.
Development happens in four key areas. Physical development covers how our bodies grow and our motor skills improve - from a baby learning to walk to an elderly person experiencing mobility changes. Intellectual development involves thinking skills, memory, and language. Emotional development focuses on identity and managing feelings, whilst social development covers relationships and friendships.
Key Insight: Development isn't just about getting bigger - it's about becoming more capable and independent in all areas of life.
Understanding these patterns helps you recognise that everyone develops at their own pace, and challenges at each stage are completely normal parts of growing up.
