to murder Elizabeth, launch a Spanish invasion + put Mary queen of Scot’s in charge. as well as in the revolt of the earls the plan was for Mary to marry the Duke of Norfolk

throckmortons papers included list of catholic sympathisers in England which suggested the governments fear of English catholics was real / life became harder for Catholics as they were treated with great suspicion by the government / another Act of Parliament was passed in 1584 that made sheltering or helping catholic priests punishable by death 

centred around the muder of Elizabeth + also encouraged English catholics to rebel / Duke of guise would invade England with 60,000 men + put Mary on the throne

Mary was being closely watched + her letters were being closely intercepted by sir Francis Walsingham / he had sufficient evidence about the plot including 6 names of catholics who would be prepared to assassinate Elizabeth / all involved were arrested + hung / oct 1586: Mary was tried by the privy council + found guilty as she had been involved with so many plots but Elizabeth didn’t sign off Mary’s death until feb 1576 + Mary was executed 8th of feb 76

by 1585 relations between England + Spain has Brocken down: England was aiding the Dutch Protestants in a rebellion against the Spanish which meant Elizabeth situation was even more dangerous / Elizabeth’s government became determined to crush catholisism: many arrests of recusants in England with up to 300 in north England alone + 31 priests were executed
