This is your BTEC National Health and Social Care Revision Guide - the second edition that's been officially endorsed by Pearson. It's designed specifically to help you tackle those externally assessed units that can feel a bit overwhelming.
The guide comes with a free online edition, so you can revise wherever you are. Whether you're on the bus, at home, or sneaking in some last-minute revision before an exam, you've got access to all the key content you need.
Quick Tip: The online version gets updated with any specification changes, so you'll always have the most current information at your fingertips.

This revision guide has been written by experienced health and social care educators including Brenda Baker, James O'Leary, Marie Whitehouse, and Georgina Shaw. They know exactly what you need to succeed because they've been teaching these subjects for years.
The official endorsement from Pearson means this guide genuinely covers everything in your specification. It's been through a proper review process to make sure it hits all the right content and helps you develop the skills you'll need for assessment.
Here's something important though - whilst this guide covers all the teaching content brilliantly, it doesn't give you the actual assessment questions you'll face. Think of it as your knowledge foundation rather than a crystal ball for your exams.
Remember: This guide supports your learning, but you'll still need to check the official specification and assessment materials for the complete picture.

You won't be studying every single unit in this guide - it depends on which BTEC qualification you're taking. Certificate students focus on Unit 1, whilst Extended Diploma students tackle Units 1, 2, 3, and 4. Check the table to see exactly which units apply to your course.
The guide uses a clever two-page system that makes revision much more effective. Content pages give you all the essential knowledge, whilst skills pages (with coloured edges) help you prepare for the actual exams and assessments.
Every page has a "Now try this" activity to test your understanding. Don't skip these - they're designed to help you practise exactly the kind of thinking you'll need in your assessments.
Pro Tip: Use the "Had a look", "Nearly there", "Nailed it" tick boxes to track your progress and identify topics that need more attention.

Unit 1: Human Lifespan Development covers everything from how babies develop motor skills to the theories that explain why we age. You'll explore physical, intellectual, emotional and social development across all life stages, plus the factors that influence how we grow and change.
The unit includes practical topics like growth principles, developmental milestones, and major theories from experts like Piaget. You'll also learn about life events, ageing processes, and how various factors from genetics to economics shape our development.
Unit 2: Working in Health and Social Care focuses on the real world of health and social care services. You'll discover the different roles people play, from healthcare assistants to social workers, and understand how services are organised and regulated.
Exam Focus: Both units include dedicated skills pages that teach you how to tackle different question types effectively.

Unit 3: Anatomy and Physiology dives deep into how the human body works. From basic cell structure to complex body systems like cardiovascular, respiratory, and nervous systems, you'll understand the science behind health and illness.
The unit covers genetic disorders, homeostasis, and various diseases that affect different body systems. You'll also develop data analysis skills for interpreting medical research and clinical trial results.
Unit 4: Enquiries into Current Research teaches you to become a critical thinker about health and social care research. You'll learn different research methods, how to evaluate sources, and understand the ethical considerations involved in research.
This unit is particularly valuable because it develops transferable skills like academic reading, referencing, and data interpretation that you'll use throughout higher education and your career.
Assessment Note: Unit 4 uses a set task format rather than a traditional exam, so the skills pages focus on research planning and analysis techniques.

Growth isn't just about getting taller - it's about measurable physical changes in height, weight, and body dimensions throughout your life. Understanding growth patterns helps health professionals spot potential problems early and track whether children are developing normally.
Growth rates aren't constant - babies grow incredibly fast (reaching half their adult height by age 2!), whilst adolescents experience sudden growth spurts during puberty. Different parts of your body also grow at different rates, which is why teenagers sometimes look a bit awkward as they adjust to their changing proportions.
Healthcare professionals use growth charts to plot measurements against expected norms for each age group. These charts are different for boys and girls because their growth patterns vary naturally.
Key Point: Head circumference measurements at birth and 6-8 weeks are crucial for identifying potential brain or skull development issues early.

Development is about gaining skills and abilities rather than just physical size. It happens in four key areas: physical (motor skills), intellectual (thinking and language), emotional (managing feelings), and social (relationships and independence).
Unlike growth, development can't be measured with a ruler - it's observed through what children can actually do. Development milestones show the typical sequence of skill acquisition, though the timing can vary between individuals.
The example of language development shows this perfectly - from basic crying and gurgling at birth to reasoning and explaining by age 8. Each stage builds on the previous one in a predictable sequence.
Remember: While the timing of milestones can vary, the sequence stays the same - this helps professionals identify when a child might need extra support.

Gross motor skills involve the large muscles in your torso, arms, and legs - basically all the movements that get you from place to place and help you interact with your environment. These skills develop in a predictable head-to-toe pattern during the first few years of life.
Babies start by controlling their neck muscles (around 6 months for rolling and sitting), then progress to leg muscle control . By age 2, they're climbing furniture and kicking balls with confidence.
During early childhood , these skills become much more refined. Three-year-olds can pedal tricycles and throw balls, whilst 8-year-olds can skip with ropes, ride bicycles, and catch balls accurately.
Development Tip: The progression from basic movements like crawling to complex skills like skipping shows how the nervous system and muscles work together more effectively over time.

Fine motor skills are all about precision - controlling those small muscles in your fingers and hands to do detailed tasks. These skills develop more slowly than gross motor skills because they require much more coordination between your brain, eyes, and hands.
The journey starts with a newborn's basic grasp reflex and progresses through key grip developments: palmar grasp (whole hand), pincer grasp (thumb and finger), and finally tripod grasp (pencil hold). Each stage enables new abilities like using spoons, building with blocks, or writing.
By age 5, children can write their names and manipulate complex construction toys. The three core components - gripping strength, manipulation skills, and hand-eye coordination - work together to enable everything from buttoning clothes to playing musical instruments.
Watch Out: Fine motor delays can significantly impact a child's independence and school readiness, which is why early identification and support are crucial.
