BTEC Tech Health and Social Care Exam Revision
Ever wondered why some people seem more confident than others, or how babies learn to walk and talk? Human development is actually quite predictable when you understand the main patterns and influences.
The PIES framework breaks development into four key areas you need to master. Physical development covers how our bodies grow and our muscles develop - think about how a baby learns to crawl, then walk, then eventually ride a bike. Intellectual development is all about thinking skills, memory and language - basically how we get smarter and learn to communicate better as we grow up.
Emotional development focuses on how we handle feelings and build our identity. This includes developing confidence and learning to cope with change - something you're probably experiencing right now! Social development is about forming friendships and relationships, plus learning how to work well with others in group situations.
Quick Tip: Remember PIES by thinking "Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, Social" - these four areas are interconnected and affect each other throughout life.
When tackling those tricky 8-mark questions, always consider how life events impact multiple PIES areas. For instance, if Sarah is influenced by fashion models, this affects her emotional development self−image, social development (peer relationships), and potentially physical development (eating habits). The examiners love seeing these connections!
