Nigeria: Africa's Economic Powerhouse
Nigeria's global significance is impressive - it's got the highest GDP in Africa and ranks 27th worldwide. Located in West Africa with its capital in Abuja, the country sits perfectly positioned along the South Atlantic coastline. This location has helped make it the 15th largest oil producer globally.
The country's diverse economy spans multiple sectors. Agriculture still employs 35% of the population, whilst Nollywood has become the world's second-largest film industry. Lagos serves as a thriving economic hub that attracts businesses from across the globe.
Nigeria's employment structure has transformed dramatically since 1990. Primary sector jobs dropped from 59% to 35%, whilst tertiary (service) jobs jumped from 33% to 45%. This shift shows how the country is developing beyond just farming and resource extraction.
Key trading relationships include China as the largest export partner, plus membership in the Commonwealth, ECOWAS, and WTO. Oil dominates exports at 98%, making this resource crucial to Nigeria's economy.
