Right, let's break down the Edexcel GCSE Geography B specification... Show more

This is the official document that sets out everything about your Edexcel GCSE Geography B course. It covers what you'll study from September 2016 onwards, with your first exams happening in 2018.
Think of this as your course bible - it contains all the essential information about topics, assessments, and what's expected of you throughout the qualification.
Key Point: This specification is specifically for Geography B (code 1GB0), which has a slightly different focus compared to Geography A.

The specification is organised into clear sections that cover everything you need to know. You'll find detailed information about three main components: Global Geographical Issues, UK Geographical Issues, and People and Environment Issues.
Each section includes specific topics, assessment details, and the geographical skills you'll need to develop. There are also helpful appendices covering fieldwork requirements, key definitions, and exam command words.
The contents page shows you exactly where to find information about assessment objectives, administration details, and how the course prepares you for further study.
Study Tip: Use this contents page to quickly navigate to specific topics when you need to check requirements or clarify what you're supposed to learn.

Edexcel Geography B is built around real-world issues that matter today. The course uses an enquiry-based approach, meaning you'll investigate geographical questions rather than just memorising facts.
You'll tackle three main areas: global issues, UK-specific challenges, and decision-making about people and environment problems. The fieldwork component is designed to connect directly with your classroom learning, making both more meaningful.
The assessment structure is straightforward with consistent command words across all three exam papers. This means once you understand what words like 'evaluate' or 'assess' require, you can apply this knowledge throughout your exams.
Confidence Booster: The specification is designed to be accessible for all abilities, with gradual progression in difficulty - you're not thrown in at the deep end!

Don't worry about navigating this course alone - there's loads of support available. You'll get topic packs for every area of study, plus teaching materials that focus on the more challenging concepts and skills.
ResultsPlus is a brilliant tool that analyses your exam performance in detail, helping you identify exactly which topics need more work. There are also marked examples of student work with examiner feedback.
The course includes an editable planner and scheme of work that your teachers can adapt. Plus, there are online communities where you can connect with other students and get guidance from subject advisors.
Pro Tip: Take advantage of the additional assessment materials for mock exams - practice really does make perfect in Geography!

Your GCSE Geography B consists of three externally examined papers, all taken in May/June of the same year. No coursework to worry about, but you will need to complete fieldwork investigations.
Paper 1 (37.5%) covers Global Geographical Issues including hazardous Earth, development dynamics, and urbanisation challenges. Paper 2 (37.5%) focuses on UK Geographical Issues, covering physical landscapes, human landscapes, and your fieldwork investigations.
Paper 3 (25%) deals with People and Environment Issues, including decision-making tasks. Each paper is 1 hour 30 minutes long and includes various question types from multiple choice to extended writing.
Exam Focus: Up to 4 marks in each paper are awarded for spelling, punctuation, grammar and specialist terminology - so brush up on those geographical terms!

Each paper mixes different question formats to test various skills. You'll encounter multiple-choice questions (great for quick marks!), short open responses, calculations, and extended writing questions worth 8-12 marks.
Paper 2 includes optional questions where you choose between coastal/river topics and urban/rural investigations. Paper 3 ends with a choice of three decision-making scenarios for the final 12-mark question.
The mark allocation is clearly structured: Papers 1 and 2 are worth 94 marks each, while Paper 3 is worth 64 marks. Remember that geographical terminology and clear communication are rewarded across all papers.
Strategy Note: The optional questions in Papers 2 and 3 mean you can play to your strengths - choose the topics you feel most confident about!

This qualification transforms you into a global citizen who understands complex people-environment interactions. You'll develop knowledge of locations, places, and processes at different scales, from local to global.
The course emphasises thinking like a geographer - understanding how geographical phenomena connect and change over time. You'll master investigative approaches, use maps and GIS technology, and learn to research effectively using digital sources.
Fieldwork skills are integrated throughout, not treated as separate add-ons. You'll apply geographical knowledge creatively to real-world contexts and develop well-evidenced arguments about contemporary issues.
Real-World Connection: These skills prepare you perfectly for A-level Geography and beyond - you're learning to analyse the world around you critically!

You'll study three major in-depth case studies: development in an emerging country, a megacity in a developing/emerging country, and how a major UK city is changing. These provide detailed, focused knowledge.
Beyond the main case studies, you'll use located examples throughout the course. These must be set within broader country contexts - you can't just mention a place without understanding where it fits geographically.
The course structure moves from geographical overview (broad understanding at larger scales) to geographical depth (detailed processes in specific places). This builds your knowledge systematically from global patterns to local details.
Study Strategy: Try to choose located examples from your case study countries where possible - this creates connections and makes revision more efficient!

Component 1 tackles three major global challenges that define our world today. You'll explore how the atmosphere circulates and climate changes, examine extreme weather and tectonic hazards, and understand global inequality patterns.
Hazardous Earth combines physical processes (atmospheric circulation) with human impacts (tropical cyclones and earthquakes). Development dynamics shows how countries develop differently and the consequences for people and environments.
Urbanisation challenges explores why cities are growing rapidly worldwide and focuses on one megacity in detail. Each topic connects physical and human geography, showing how they interact in the real world.
Global Perspective: These topics help you understand current news events - from climate change discussions to urban planning challenges in developing countries!
