Understanding the Imperfect Tense
Ever wanted to say "I used to play football every weekend" in French? The imperfect tense is exactly what you need! This past tense is perfect for describing habits, repeated actions, or situations that went on for ages without a specific end point.
The formation is actually quite straightforward once you get the hang of it. You take the nous form of any verb in the present tense, chop off the -ons ending, then add your new imperfect endings. It's like following a recipe - same steps every time!
Here's the magic formula: je finissais (I used to finish), tu finissais (you used to finish), il/elle finissait he/sheusedtofinish. The pattern continues with nous, vous, and ils/elles forms using -ions, -iez, and -aient endings respectively.
Quick tip: The verb être (to be) is the only rebel here - it uses the stem "ét-" instead of following the normal rule, but still uses the same endings!
