'An inspector calls' is a play written by J.B. Priestley in 1945. The play centres around the
theme of blame and responsibility. Priestly us

Setting the Stage and Mr Birling's Selfishness

Priestley immediately shows us the theme of responsibility through his brilliant use of lighting. The stage directions call for "pink and intimate" lighting that turns "brighter and harsher" when Inspector Goole arrives. This isn't just fancy staging - it's genius storytelling that reveals everything about the Birlings before they even speak.

The pink lighting represents how the Birlings see themselves - through rose-tinted glasses, believing they're wonderful people. They live in their comfortable bubble, completely ignoring their responsibility to help others in society. When the Inspector arrives with harsh, bright light, he strips away their illusions and forces them to face the truth about Eva Smith's death.

Mr Birling's character perfectly embodies selfish capitalism. His famous line about "cranks" who think "everyone has to look after everybody else, as if we're all mixed up together like bees in a hive" is deeply ironic. Bees actually work together for their community's survival - exactly what Priestley believes society should do! Birling's refusal to accept shared responsibility sets him up for a spectacular downfall.

Quick Note: The bee metaphor is brilliant exam material - it shows Priestley's belief that society should work together, whilst highlighting Birling's complete misunderstanding of community responsibility.

The Inspector's Message and Character Development

Inspector Goole becomes the moral voice of the play, teaching the Birlings about their duty to others. His powerful line "Public men, Mr Birling, have responsibilities as well as privileges" completely silences the pompous businessman. This moment shows how Priestley believed that those with power and wealth have an even greater duty to help society.

Mrs Birling proves just as stubborn as her husband, refusing to accept blame and instead pointing fingers at the father of Eva's unborn baby. She doesn't realise she's actually condemning her own son Eric! Her selective moral compass only works when it doesn't affect her family - showing the hypocrisy of the upper classes.

The Inspector's final speech contains the play's most important message: "We are members of one body. We are responsible for each other." The warning about "fire and blood and anguish" likely refers to both hell and the potential for another world war if society doesn't learn from its mistakes.

Eric and Sheila represent hope for the future. Unlike their parents, they genuinely feel remorse and accept responsibility for their actions. Eric's blunt statement that "it's still the same rotten story" shows he understands that their behaviour was wrong regardless of whether the Inspector was real. Priestley deliberately makes the younger characters learn from their experience, suggesting that each generation can choose to be better than the last.

Exam Tip: The generational divide is crucial - older characters refuse to change while younger ones show genuine remorse and growth, representing Priestley's hope for social progress.
