Escape From Reality
The pounding music of the Glasgow nightclub provides a rare moment of happiness for our narrator. Dancing becomes a temporary escape from a reality they find largely unbearable. The club atmosphere – dark with flashing lights and laser beams – creates the perfect environment to forget everyday life.
Outside the club, the narrator's primary escape from boring reality is their smartphone. Hours of endless scrolling numb their senses and help them avoid awkward situations. This dependency has become so severe that leaving home without the phone feels "like a crime" – it's simultaneously "a lifesaver, distraction, search engine, a contact, an addiction."
As the night draws to a close, panic strikes when the narrator can't find their phone. With shaky breath and stinging tears, they explain the situation to their friend Mari, who dismisses their concerns as an overreaction. The loss feels catastrophic – nearly £900 gone, along with countless memories and their only means of escaping reality.
Think about it: How dependent are you on your phone? Notice how the narrator experiences physical symptoms of anxiety when separated from their device.
Despite Mari's attempts to call the missing phone, they only reach voicemail. More concerning still, when someone finally answers, it's a "deep male voice" claiming to be "Kirsten Thorpe" – the narrator. The situation becomes even more distressing when Mari's phone dies, leaving them stranded without any way to contact the outside world.
The Mysterious Caller
The strange phone call leaves the narrator deeply unsettled. Someone has their phone and is bizarrely pretending to be them. When the narrator demands their phone back, they're met with silence, creating a moment of eerie tension that goes unresolved as Mari's phone finally dies.
With both phones now unavailable, the pair must face the harsh reality of walking four miles home in heels through the cold Glasgow night. The narrator's mind spins with worry throughout the torturous journey. This unwelcome confrontation with reality – without their digital escape mechanism – feels like the ultimate punishment.
Finally reaching home, the narrator fumbles with icy fingers to unlock their door before collapsing onto their bed "like a marshmallow into hot chocolate." Wrapped in blankets, they try to forget the traumatic night – until an unexpected sound interrupts the silence.
Plot twist alert: Sometimes the solutions to our problems are hiding in plain sight – but that doesn't necessarily resolve all mysteries!
In a shocking twist, the narrator discovers their phone sitting right where they left it – on their bedside table. This revelation creates an even more disturbing question: if their phone was at home all along, who answered it earlier and claimed to be them? The story ends with this unsettling mystery hanging in the air.
