Strategic Text Analysis
Approach every text like a detective solving a mystery. Your job is to uncover the themes, spot literary devices, and work out what the writer is really trying to achieve.
Don't just identify techniques - explain their effects. When you spot alliteration, ask yourself: "What mood does this create? How does it support the writer's message?" This analytical thinking is what separates good responses from brilliant ones.
Authorial intent isn't always obvious, so look for subtle clues in word choices, structure, and tone. The more you practice this detective work, the sharper your analytical skills become.
Key Point: Always connect techniques to their effects - examiners want to see you understand the 'why', not just the 'what'.
