The Gymnasium Setting

Ever wondered how quickly familiar places can become prison-like? Atwood opens her dystopian novel in a converted gymnasium that once hosted basketball games, school dances, and teenage romance.

The narrator describes sleeping on army cots where students once played sports and danced. She can almost smell the lingering memories - sweat from basketball games, perfume from school dances, and the excitement of young people through different decades. This creates a powerful contrast between past freedom and present confinement.

The nostalgic descriptions serve a crucial purpose they make the setting feel real and relatable whilst highlighting how dramatically society has changed. The gymnasium represents lost innocence and freedom, now replaced by strict surveillance and control.

Key insight Notice how Atwood uses sensory details (smell, sound, touch) to make the oppressive atmosphere feel real and immediate to readers.

Surveillance and Control

Think about how it would feel to be watched every moment of every day - that's the reality these women face. Aunt Sara and Aunt Elizabeth patrol constantly with electric cattle prods, treating the women like dangerous animals rather than human beings.

The hierarchy of control becomes clear Aunts supervise the women, but Angels (male guards) hold the real power and carry guns. This reflects the patriarchal society that has emerged, where even the religious imagery is corrupted - angels should be protectors, not objects of fear.

Despite the oppression, small acts of rebellion emerge. The women learn to whisper silently, touch hands when not watched, and secretly exchange their real names Alma, Janine, Dolores, Moira, June. These names represent their individual identities that the regime wants to erase.

Literary technique The juxtaposition between the women's humanity (sharing names) and their dehumanising treatment (cattle prods) creates powerful emotional impact.

Chapter Transition

The chapter ends with a simple heading "SHOPPING" - seemingly innocent, but in this oppressive world, even basic activities like shopping become loaded with meaning and control.

This abrupt transition signals that we're about to see how everyday activities have been transformed in this dystopian society. What should be a normal part of life becomes another form of regulated control.

Foreshadowing This simple word hints at how the regime controls every aspect of daily life, even something as basic as buying necessities.
