The Gymnasium Setting
Ever been in your old primary school and felt weird about how different it looks now? That's exactly what Atwood uses to show how this dystopian society has repurposed everything from the past. The women sleep in what used to be a gymnasium where teenagers once played basketball, had school dances, and lived normal lives.
The narrator can still sense the ghost of the past - she imagines smelling old sweat, chewing gum, and perfume from when girls in mini-skirts used to watch games from the balcony. There's something haunting about how she describes the lingering music and memories like "a palimpsest of unheard sound" - basically, layers of the past still echoing.
The contrast is brutal: where there used to be freedom, youth, and possibility, now there are army cots in rows with spaces between so the women can't talk to each other. Even their sheets are like children's bedding, showing how the regime infantilises them.
Key insight: The transformed space mirrors how the women themselves have been stripped of their former identities and "repurposed" by this new society.
Control and Resistance
Here's where things get properly dystopian. The women are watched over by "Aunts" - other women who carry electric cattle prods (yes, the same ones used on animals and during civil rights protests). This detail shows how the regime sees these women as livestock rather than human beings.
The hierarchy of control is clear: Aunts watch the women, Angels (male guards) carry the guns, and nobody fully trusts anybody else. The women aren't allowed out except for supervised walks around a barbed-wire enclosed football field, like prisoners in an exercise yard.
But here's what makes this brilliant - even under total surveillance, the women find tiny ways to resist. They learn to whisper without sound, stretch across the spaces to touch hands, and lip-read to share their names with each other. These names - Alma, Janine, Dolores, Moira, June - become acts of rebellion because they represent individual identity.
Key insight: Even in the most oppressive systems, people find ways to maintain human connection and preserve pieces of their identity.
