The Poem and Its Story
Ever wondered what happens to dictators after they die? Shelley's "Ozymandias" gives us the perfect answer through a traveller's tale about a broken statue in the desert.
The poem describes the remains of a massive statue of Ramesses II (also called Ozymandias), an Egyptian pharaoh. Only the legs and a shattered face remain, surrounded by endless empty sand. The statue's base still boasts "My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings" - but there's nothing left of his empire.
The irony is brilliant: this "king of kings" claimed his works would last forever, yet his statue is crumbling and his kingdom has completely vanished. The sculptor cleverly captured the pharaoh's cruelty and arrogance in the stone face, meaning the art has outlasted the ruler himself.
Key Point: The poem shows that human power is temporary, but art and nature endure forever.
Shelley's Hidden Message
Here's where it gets interesting - Shelley wasn't just writing about some ancient Egyptian king. As a radical romantic poet, he was actually taking aim at the powerful rulers of his own time, especially King George III.
Shelley was basically a revolutionary who hated monarchy, organised religion, and war. He'd been kicked out of Oxford for his atheist views and came from wealth but chose to fight for ordinary people instead. Writing during George III's reign, he saw clear parallels between the ancient tyrant and Britain's own unpopular king.
King George III had ruled longer than any previous monarch, fought costly wars (including losing America), and was widely seen as oppressive. Sound familiar? Just like Ozymandias, George thought his power would last forever.
The poem works as a warning to all rulers: treat people badly, and you'll be remembered as a tyrant whose empire crumbles. Meanwhile, the artists and writers who capture your true nature? Their work lives on forever.
