Plot Overview and Key Characters
Leon's story begins with neglect from his mother Carol, whose declining mental health leads to him and his baby brother Jake being placed in foster care. This isn't just another sad story though - it's about resilience and finding family in unexpected places.
The heart of the novel lies in Leon's bond with Jake and his fierce determination to protect his younger brother. When the system threatens to separate them due to their different skin colours, Leon's world falls apart. His emotional maturity shines through as he takes on a parental role that shouldn't be his responsibility.
Maureen represents hope in Leon's chaotic world. She provides the maternal care and stability that his biological mother couldn't offer, helping Leon preserve his innocence whilst learning to manage complex emotions like grief and abandonment.
Remember: Kit de Waal doesn't want us to hate Carol completely - she's showing how little people understood about mental health in the 1980s, making Carol more victim than villain.

The novel's 1981 setting isn't random - this was during serious racial tensions in Britain, reflected through characters like Castro and Tufty who face inequality and mistreatment. Leon's mixed-race identity adds another layer to his struggle for belonging.
