Meet the Duke: Power and Control
You're about to meet one of the most disturbing narrators in poetry. The Duke of Ferrara is chatting to a visitor about a portrait of his late wife, and straight away, something feels off. Notice how he says "my last Duchess" - that possessive pronoun tells you everything about his need for control.
The dramatic irony hits hard when he says she looks "as if she were alive" - because she's definitely not alive anymore. The Duke controls who gets to see her portrait by drawing and opening a curtain, which represents how he now has the power he never had when she was living.
What's really creepy is how he strips away her identity by calling her "that pictured countenance" instead of using her name. He's turning her into an object he can control, unlike when she was alive and had her own thoughts and feelings.
Key insight: The Duke's obsession with control reveals itself through his language - he owns her even in death.
