Ever wondered how a poem can make you feel completely uncomfortable? Browning's dramatic monologue does exactly that by letting us hear only the Duke's twisted perspective. This first-person narrative reveals just how controlling and unreliable he truly is - we're trapped listening to his side of the story.
The poem uses iambic pentameter to create a conversational flow, but don't be fooled by how natural it sounds. The Duke's need for control extends even to his speech patterns. Caesura (pauses) reinforce his commanding presence, whilst enjambment lets his emotions overflow like a sinister confession.
