Epilepsy and Brain Surgery: In people with epilepsy, seizures can quickly spread from one brain hemisphere to the other through the corpus callosum (the bridge connecting both sides of the brain). Surgically cutting part or all of the corpus callosum can dramatically reduce this spread and decrease how often certain generalised seizures occur.

Arthur Birling - Character Overview: Arthur Birling is the patriarch of the Birling family in "An Inspector Calls" and represents the selfish, money-obsessed capitalist mindset. He's constantly trying to impress others, especially Gerald, because Gerald comes from a more respected family. Birling clearly favours Gerald over his own son Eric.

Birling's Role in Eva Smith's Death: Birling directly contributed to Eva Smith's tragic end by firing her simply because she asked for a pay rise and organised a protest. This shows his complete disregard for working-class people, whom he sees merely as cheap labour for profit.

Key Quote: "unsinkable, absolutely unsinkable" - Birling's confident statement about the Titanic immediately destroys his credibility with the audience, showing how wrong his judgements can be.

Priestley's Social Commentary: Through Birling's character, Priestley criticises the British class system and highlights the prejudice and inequality of early 20th-century society. Birling's callous attitude, especially when he complains about the inspector ruining their "nice little family celebration," reveals his true priorities.
