The Porter's Comedy and Hidden Truths
Right after two incredibly dark scenes, Shakespeare throws in the porter's comedic scene - and it's not just for laughs. This sudden shift from tragedy to comedy creates a jarring effect that actually makes the horror more striking.
The porter speaks in prose (normal speech) rather than the iambic verse used by nobles, which might make him seem less important. However, his jokes are packed with deeper meaning. His chat about how alcohol creates confusion and lust is basically describing Macbeth's own moral confusion and hunger for power.
Most chillingly, the porter jokes that Inverness castle's door is like hell's gate. When he shouts "Who's there, in the name of Beelzebub ?", he's unknowingly spot-on - guests entering Macbeth's castle really are putting themselves in the devil's hands.
Think about it: The porter's "harmless" jokes reveal truths that even he doesn't fully understand - that's classic Shakespearean irony!
Macbeth Takes Centre Stage and Suspicions Grow
Now that Lady Macbeth's plan has worked, she starts to fade into the background whilst Macbeth becomes the main focus. You can see his nervousness in his short, choppy responses - when Lennox gives a long speech about the wild weather, Macbeth just mutters "'Twas a rough night."
Macbeth nearly gives himself away when asked if the King is leaving today. He answers "He does" before catching himself and changing it to "he did appoint so" - almost revealing he knows Duncan is dead!
Once Duncan's body is found, Macbeth transforms completely. He takes charge of the situation and seizes control, ultimately becoming King of Scotland. Interestingly, Shakespeare doesn't show us Macbeth's coronation - we only hear about it secondhand, just like we never saw Duncan's actual murder.
However, several characters start showing suspicion of Macbeth. Lennox says the chamberlains "as it seemed" killed Duncan - that phrase "as it seemed" suggests doubt. Most importantly, Macduff emerges as Macbeth's future enemy, questioning why Macbeth killed the chamberlains and refusing to attend the coronation.
Key insight: Macduff, not Malcolm, becomes the real threat to Macbeth because he's more decisive and willing to take action.
