Understanding the Story's Background
William Golding wrote this powerful novel in 1954, drawing from his own experiences serving in the navy during World War II. He'd seen firsthand how quickly people could turn violent, and this shaped his view of human nature.
The story was actually inspired by an earlier book called The Coral Island, where shipwrecked boys work together harmoniously. Golding thought this was rubbish - he believed that without adult supervision, children would naturally turn savage rather than cooperative.
Writing during the 1950s, Golding lived in an era where science was explaining more about the world, but he was fascinated by the things science couldn't explain - like why humans have the capacity for both good and evil. This internal struggle between civilisation and savagery becomes the heart of his novel.
Key Point: Golding wasn't just telling an adventure story - he was making a statement about the darkness that exists within all of us.
The Main Players and What They Represent
Ralph serves as your typical "good guy" protagonist - the twelve-year-old with fair hair who tries to keep everyone organised and focused on getting rescued. He represents order, democracy, and the civilising force in society. Think of him as the voice of reason trying to hold everything together.
Piggy might be the most important character, even though the other boys constantly dismiss him. He's overweight, wears glasses, and has an annoying voice - but he's also the smartest person on the island. Piggy represents rational thought and scientific thinking. His glasses literally become the tool for making fire, symbolising how knowledge and science can help humanity.
Roger is essentially the opposite of the "good guys" - he starts as a quiet bully but gradually reveals himself to be genuinely sadistic. He enjoys hurting the younger boys and eventually becomes Jack's enforcer. Roger represents the evil that lurks within human nature when there are no consequences for bad behaviour.
The Littluns are the younger boys (around 6 years old) who should be receiving care and protection. Instead, they're largely ignored, bullied, and used by the older boys, showing how quickly society abandons its most vulnerable members.
Remember: Each character isn't just a person - they're symbols representing different aspects of human society and nature.
