Dr Jekyll: The Respectable Doctor with a Dark Secret
Dr Jekyll isn't your typical villain - he's actually a respected member of Victorian society who makes a catastrophic mistake. His dual nature represents the eternal struggle between good and evil that exists within all of us, but Jekyll takes it to the extreme by literally creating another person to embody his darker impulses.
What makes Jekyll fascinating is his scientific ambition and hubris. He genuinely believes he can outsmart human nature itself through chemistry and willpower. This overreaching ambition reflects Victorian anxieties about science challenging religious beliefs about morality and the soul.
Jekyll's internal conflict drives the entire story. He's deeply self-aware of his flaws but feels powerless to resist them, which is why he creates Hyde in the first place. The tragedy is that his attempt to maintain his respectable image whilst indulging his darker desires ultimately destroys him completely.
Key Insight: Jekyll's famous quote "Man is not truly one, but truly two" captures the central theme - we all have good and evil within us, but trying to separate them is dangerous.
