Exposure by Wilfred Owen: When Weather Becomes the Enemy
Ever wondered what actually killed most soldiers in WWI? Owen's "Exposure" shows you the shocking truth—it wasn't enemy fire, but the brutal cold that claimed countless lives in the trenches. The poem opens with brains that "ache" from merciless iced east winds that literally "knife" the soldiers, immediately showing how weather becomes a weapon.
Owen cleverly uses personification throughout, making the wind, rain, and snow into attacking forces. The weather is described as having intent—it's merciless, it attacks, it feels for their faces with "lingering stealth." This technique helps you understand that nature itself has become the enemy, more deadly than any human opponent.
The repetition of "But nothing happens" appears five times, creating a haunting rhythm that emphasises the soldiers' helplessness. They're not dying heroically in battle—they're slowly freezing to death whilst waiting. The phrase captures the cruel irony: everything is happening (they're dying), yet nothing happens (no actual fighting occurs).
Key Insight: Owen uses sound devices like sibilance (hissing 's' sounds) and alliteration to make you actually hear the wind cutting through the trenches—notice how the poem sounds as cold as its subject matter.
