Eric Birling - The Troubled Son

Eric starts as "half shy, half assertive" - basically that awkward stage where you're not quite sure who you are yet. He's got a drinking problem (Sheila calls him "squiffy") and everyone treats him like the family disappointment, with Gerald joking that Eric's probably "been up to something."

Here's where it gets interesting though - Eric actually shows socialist sympathies early on, asking "why shouldn't they try for higher wages?" Unlike his parents, he genuinely cares about working-class people getting fair treatment.

His relationship with his dad is rubbish. Eric tells him straight up "you're not the kind of father a chap could go to when he's in trouble." When the truth comes out about Eva Smith, Eric gets properly angry at his parents for caring more about their reputation than a dead girl.

Key Point Eric represents the younger generation's potential for change - he's flawed but capable of genuine remorse and growth.

Sheila Birling - From Spoilt to Sympathetic

Sheila's transformation is massive. She starts as a materialistic, spoilt rich girl who needs her engagement ring to "feel really engaged" and calls her dad "daddy" like a little kid. When she's jealous of Eva Smith at the shop, she uses her influence to get her sacked - proper nasty behaviour.

But here's the thing - Sheila's the first to genuinely change. She becomes incredibly insightful, realising the Inspector is "giving us the rope so we'll hang ourselves." She's also the first to develop real socialist views, declaring "these girls aren't cheap labour - they're people."

By the end, she's calling out her parents' behaviour as "cruel and vile" and refusing to put her engagement ring back on until she's had time to think. She's found her voice and her moral compass.

Key Point Sheila represents hope for the future - she shows how the younger generation can learn, change, and become more socially responsible.

An inspector calls

"HAIF Shy - half assertive" "you're beginning to pretend that

Mr Birling - The Stubborn Capitalist

Mr Birling is everything wrong with capitalism in one character. He's obsessed with "lower costs and higher prices" and desperate for his knighthood to boost his social status. When he calls the Titanic "absolutely unsinkable," it's dramatic irony at its finest - the audience knows he's completely wrong.

He treats his workers terribly, justifying sacking Eva because "she'd had a lot to say - far too much." Basically, he wants to keep working-class people quiet and powerless. He's also dismissive of his children, telling Sheila to "run along" when things get serious.

When everything starts falling apart, Mr Birling gets desperate. He tries bribing the Inspector with "thousands, yes thousands" and even threatens his own son Eric when the truth comes out about the stolen money.

Key Point Mr Birling represents the old guard of capitalism - selfish, stubborn, and completely unwilling to accept social responsibility.

An inspector calls

"HAIF Shy - half assertive" "you're beginning to pretend that
In the initial stage directions nothings really happened a

Inspector Goole - The Moral Voice

The Inspector is "massive, solid and purposeful" - basically impossible to ignore. He's Priestley's way of delivering the play's main message about social responsibility. His method is brilliant "one line of inquiry at a time" so nobody can hide behind each other.

He uses shocking language to make them feel guilty "she lies with a burnt out inside on a slab." But his most important message is that "we are responsible for each other" and that Eva represents "millions and millions" of people suffering from social inequality.

The Inspector refuses to be intimidated by their wealth or status. When they try their usual upper-class tactics, he shuts them down with "don't stammer and yammer at me again." His final warning about "fire and blood and anguish" if people don't learn is properly chilling.

Key Point Inspector Goole isn't just investigating a death - he's forcing the family (and audience) to examine their moral responsibility to society.

An inspector calls

"HAIF Shy - half assertive" "you're beginning to pretend that
In the initial stage directions nothings really happened a

Mrs Birling - Cold and Heartless

Mrs Birling is probably the most unlikeable character in the play. She's a snob who looks down on the working class, saying things like "as if a girl of that sort would ever refuse money." She uses her influence on the charity committee to deny Eva help, then has the nerve to call it her "duty."

She's completely out of touch with her own family. She doesn't realise Eric has a drinking problem, saying "you don't get drunk" - showing how little she actually knows her son. When she blames "the young man who was the father of the child," it's pure dramatic irony because she's talking about Eric.

Even after everything's revealed, Mrs Birling refuses to accept responsibility. She thinks she's the only one who "didn't give into" the Inspector and mocks her children for caring about Eva's death.

Key Point Mrs Birling represents the worst of upper-class privilege - cold, prejudiced, and completely unwilling to change or show compassion.

An inspector calls

"HAIF Shy - half assertive" "you're beginning to pretend that

Key Quote Analysis Sheila's Awakening

When Sheila declares "these girls aren't cheap labour - they're people," it's a massive moment. The plosive sounds (harsh consonants) show her anger at how working-class girls are being exploited. The dash emphasises her fury at this dehumanising treatment.

The word "cheap" is crucial here - it shows how capitalism values profit over people. Sheila's starting to understand that girls her age are being treated as objects rather than human beings with feelings and rights.

This quote represents Sheila's journey from spoilt rich girl to someone with genuine socialist sympathies. She's recognising the massive inequality between her comfortable life and Eva's struggle for survival.

Key Point This quote shows Priestley's central message - that working-class people deserve dignity, respect, and fair treatment, not exploitation.

An inspector calls

"HAIF Shy - half assertive" "you're beginning to pretend that
In the initial stage directions nothings really happened a

Key Quote Analysis Mr Birling's Cruelty

Mr Birling's comment "she had a lot to say - far too much - so she had to go" reveals everything wrong with his character. The dashes create pauses that make his logic sound fragmented and ridiculous - because it is.

This quote shows how women and workers were expected to stay silent about unfair treatment. Eva Smith dared to speak up for better wages and working conditions, so Birling made an example of her to intimidate other workers.

The phrase shows Birling's dismissive attitude towards anyone challenging his authority. He can't handle being questioned, especially by a working-class woman who should, in his view, know her place.

Key Point This quote demonstrates how the upper classes used their power to silence and punish anyone who dared to demand better treatment.

An inspector calls

"HAIF Shy - half assertive" "you're beginning to pretend that
In the initial stage directions nothings really happened a

Key Quote Analysis Mrs Birling's Prejudice

When Mrs Birling says "girls of that class," she's showing her complete disdain for working-class people. She won't even use Eva's name, treating her as just one of many rather than an individual person - it's dehumanising.

The word "girls" instead of "women" is deliberately belittling, making them sound childish and unimportant. "That class" shows she sees herself as completely superior and separate from working-class people.

This language reveals Mrs Birling's cynical attitude - she doesn't trust working-class people and has zero sympathy for their struggles. She literally cannot see them as real people deserving of respect.

Key Point Mrs Birling's language shows how the upper classes used words to maintain social divisions and justify their cruel treatment of the poor.
