Medieval Society and Women's Place

Medieval society was built on a patriarchal system where men held all the power and women were expected to obey without question. The Church taught that women were responsible for original sin (thanks, Eve!), making them morally weaker and more likely to lead men astray.

Religious texts like the Bible reinforced these ideas. The apostle Paul specifically said men had authority over women and that wives should remain silent. Women's main value was seen as childbearing and serving their husbands - not exactly empowering stuff.

Interestingly, courtly love created a contradictory ideal where knights and ladies engaged in romanticised (often adulterous) relationships. Think Lancelot and Guinevere - these stories celebrated forbidden love whilst society condemned it.

Key Point: The Black Death and Peasants' Revolt (1381) challenged the feudal system, showing that social change was possible even in rigid medieval society.

The Marriage Debate

Januarie, an old knight, decides to marry after a lifetime of being single - but his motivations are purely selfish. He wants sexual satisfaction, an heir for his fortune, and an obedient servant. Classic medieval male thinking!

His advisors give conflicting advice. Placebo encourages him to ignore biblical warnings and choose a young wife. Justinius, speaking from bitter experience with his own marriage, warns against giving a young wife too much property and rushing into marriage.

The tale presents various biblical wives as examples: Judith, Rebecca, Abigail, and Esther. However, most of these women either deceive their husbands or cause problems - reinforcing anti-feminist attitudes of the time.

Theofrastus represents the ultimate pessimist, believing marriage should only happen as a last resort. Meanwhile, the mirror in the marketplace metaphor warns that what you see isn't always what you get - very relevant for Januarie's situation!

Remember: Grisildis from the Clerk's Tale represents the 'ideal' obedient wife - a standard no real woman could or should meet.

Themes and Motifs in the Prologue

The Merchant's prologue immediately establishes the anti-feminist tone by having the Merchant complain about his overbearing wife. Set in Lombardy (famous for banking and deceit), the story warns us that dishonesty is coming.

Januarie's obsession with marriage centres on his selfish desires. He wants a young, tender wife but contradicts himself by demanding she be both submissive and strong. His fantasy of marriage as paradise shows how deluded he is about the reality of relationships.

The tale is packed with biblical references and anti-feminist metaphors. Women are consistently portrayed as shrews who deceive men. These attitudes reflect medieval society's deep mistrust of female independence and sexuality.

One major worry for Januarie is that having such bliss in marriage might prevent him experiencing heaven in the afterlife. This bizarre logic shows how medieval religion complicated even personal happiness.

Think About It: Notice how hastily Januarie makes decisions - this impulsiveness will definitely come back to bite him later in the story.

Wedding Night and Deception Begins

The wedding night scene is frankly disturbing - Chaucer presents it entirely from Januarie's perspective, showing his selfishness and complete disregard for May's feelings. The description of their intimate moments reveals the ugly reality behind medieval marriage arrangements.

Damian, Januarie's squire, falls desperately in love with May and becomes lovesick. When Januarie sends May to comfort the 'ill' Damian, she discovers his love letter hidden in his clothing. This moment marks the beginning of their secret affair.

May shows surprising agency by deciding to respond positively to Damian. She writes back agreeing to the relationship, and Damian is immediately 'cured' of his lovesickness - showing how their mutual attraction provides an escape from the oppressive marriage.

Januarie creates a walled garden that only he has the key to, symbolising his attempt to control May completely. However, when he goes blind (both literally and metaphorically), his control begins to slip.

Plot Twist: May cleverly makes a wax copy of the garden key so Damian can sneak in - medieval women found ways to resist male control!
