Paper 1 Overview
This isn't just any English exam - Paper 1 is worth half your entire GCSE English Language grade. You've got 1 hour 45 minutes to earn 80 marks, split evenly between reading (Section A) and writing (Section B).
The exam tests your ability to read critically and write creatively. You'll work with an extract from a novel, analysing how writers craft their work whilst demonstrating your own writing skills.
💡 Pro tip: Spend your first 15 minutes reading through everything carefully. This investment pays off massively when you're answering questions later.

Question 1: The 'List 4 Things' Question
This retrieval question tests your AO1 skills - basically, can you find and understand information in the text? It's often the easiest marks you'll get, so don't mess it up.
Your method should be rock-solid: underline key words in the question, box the specific lines mentioned, then hunt for four different pieces of information. Write each as a proper sentence like "He had wild eyes" - not just "Wild eyes."
Each correct answer bags you one mark, making this a crucial confidence builder. Spend about 6 minutes here, but don't overthink it.

Question 2: Language Analysis
Now things get serious. This language analysis question tests AO2 - your ability to explain how writers use specific techniques to create effects.
You must identify language features (metaphors, sentence types, word choices), explain what they mean, then analyse their intended effect. Subject terminology is non-negotiable here.
Zoom in on individual words rather than quoting huge chunks. Pick powerful examples and dissect them properly. The examiner wants to see you understand how language actually works, not just that you can spot techniques.
