Understanding Discourse Communities
Think of your school, your football team, or even your friendship group - they're all discourse communities. According to linguist John Swales, these communities share common goals and communicate using specific genres and specialist language that outsiders might not fully grasp.
What makes these communities fascinating is how they create invisible rules about communication. Members develop inferential frameworks - basically, unspoken knowledge about how to behave and speak appropriately. You've already mastered this without realising it when you automatically know not to shout at a teacher or use slang in a job interview.
Power hierarchies play a massive role in professional discourse communities. Drew and Heritage identified that organisations have unequal relationships where language becomes a tool of control. Your language choices can literally make or break your career - just ask the employees who've been sacked for inappropriate social media posts.
Key Point: Every professional environment has its own communication rules. Learning to code-switch between different discourse communities is a crucial life skill.
