The Theme of Kingship in Macbeth: A Comprehensive Essay Plan

Duncan: The Perfect King
Duncan represents everything a divine right monarch should be - generous, trusting, and genuinely caring about his people. He treats his subjects like family, calling Macbeth "valiant cousin, worthy gentleman" and rewarding good deeds with genuine praise. This creates a semantic field of praise that shows how much he values those around him.
Shakespeare uses dramatic irony here because we know Macbeth will soon destroy this perfect king. Duncan's fatal flaw (his hamartia) is being too trusting - the very quality that makes him a good king also leads to his downfall.
When Duncan dies, even nature reacts violently. "The earth was feverous and did shake" uses personification to show that killing a divinely chosen king disrupts the Great Chain of Being - essentially breaking the natural order of the universe.
Remember: Duncan's perfection as a king makes Macbeth's later tyranny seem even worse by comparison!
Macbeth: The Tyrant King
By the end of the play, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth have become monsters. Malcolm calls them "this dead butcher and fiend-like queen" - notice how Shakespeare uses a semantic field of evil and violence to describe them. "Butcher" suggests mindless slaughter, while "fiend" makes Lady Macbeth sound like a demon.
This language completely contrasts with the "brave" and "valiant" descriptions of Duncan. The juxtaposition is deliberate - Shakespeare wants us to see how far Macbeth has fallen from his original heroic status.
Macbeth was never meant to be king in the first place, which is why his reign is doomed from the start. By murdering Duncan and stealing the throne, he's disrupted the natural order that God supposedly established.
Key insight: Shakespeare shows that illegitimate power always leads to destruction - Macbeth's tyrannical rule proves he was never worthy of kingship.
