WHAT IS QUESTION ONE?:
ENGLISH LANGUAGE PAPER ONE QUESTION ONE, REQUIRES YOU TO RETRIEVE SPECIF

Question One: Information Retrieval (4 marks, 5 minutes)

Question One is your easiest win on the paper - it's all about finding specific facts from the text without any analysis needed. You're literally hunting for who, what, where, when, or why details that are clearly stated in the passage.

The key is being laser-focused on the line numbers they give you. Don't waste time reading the whole text again! Scan those specific lines, underline relevant details, and pick out four different points that directly answer the question.

Your answers should be short and sweet - think bullet points rather than essays. You can score multiple marks in one sentence, but never repeat the same information twice. For example, if asked about hyenas, you might write: "Hyenas cause worry" (1 mark) or "Hyenas attack in packs any animal they can run down" (3 marks in one go).

Top Tip: Aim for four separate points to guarantee all 4 marks. Even though this seems simple, these marks can push you up a grade boundary!

Question Two: Language Analysis (8 marks, 10 minutes)

Question Two tests your ability to analyse language techniques and explain their effects on readers. You're looking for metaphors, similes, personification, and powerful word choices that create specific moods or images.

Follow the proven structure: quote → technique → effect → zoom in. Start with "The writer uses [technique] to describe..." then explore the connotations of specific words. Why did the writer choose "beast" instead of "animal"? What does "lunged" suggest that "moved" wouldn't?

Always connect your analysis back to reader response. Don't just say "this is a metaphor" - explain how it makes readers feel afraid, excited, or sympathetic. Push your analysis deeper by exploring why the writer made these exact choices.

Write two solid paragraphs using this approach, and you'll hit the mark scheme perfectly. Remember to focus on the most interesting and powerful language rather than obvious or weak examples.

Key Structure: Quote → Name technique → Explain effect → Analyse specific words → Reader impact

Question Three: Structure Analysis (8 marks, 10 minutes)

Question Three focuses on how the text is organised and why the writer structures it that way. You're analysing the journey from beginning to middle to end, looking for shifts in focus, pace, or perspective.

Think about structural choices like starting with action, building tension, or ending with a cliffhanger. How does the writer grab attention at the start? Where do they place the climax? What effect does the ending have?

Use the beginning-middle-end framework to organise your response. Show how the writer shifts focus between different elements and explain how this interests readers. Does it create suspense? Build empathy? Generate excitement?

Always link structural decisions back to reader experience. The writer isn't just randomly organising events - they're crafting a journey that manipulates how we feel and what we focus on throughout the text.

Focus Areas: Opening hooks, pace changes, shifts in focus, climactic moments, and how structure creates specific reader emotions.

Question Four: Evaluation and Analysis (20 marks, 20 minutes)

Question Four is your big essay question where you evaluate a statement about the text. You'll either "wholeheartedly agree," "partially agree," or disagree, then build a convincing argument using both language and structure analysis.

This combines everything you've learned - you're analysing techniques, effects, and overall presentation while developing a clear viewpoint. Choose your strongest examples and really dig deep into how the writer creates meaning.

Write 3-4 detailed paragraphs using the PEE structure (Point, Evidence, Explanation). Each paragraph should include quotes, technique identification, connotation analysis, and reader impact. Show how different techniques work together to support your argument.

Don't just analyse individual techniques - make connections between them. How does the language work with the structure? How do techniques build up throughout the text to create the overall effect mentioned in the statement?

Success Strategy: Pick your strongest examples, analyse them thoroughly, and always link back to whether you agree with the statement. Quality over quantity wins here.
