Understanding Question 2: Language Analysis
Question 2 is all about digging deep into how writers craft their language. You'll get a short extract and need to analyse the language techniques the writer uses to create particular effects or convey specific ideas.
The question will always ask "How does the writer use language to..." followed by something specific - like showing a character's feelings or creating atmosphere. You're looking for techniques like metaphors, alliteration, semantic fields, and more.
Remember, this isn't about what happens in the text - it's about how the writer uses words to make you feel or think certain things. The example extract shows Mr Fisher remembering when books were exciting, using techniques like similes ("ran like gazelles") and metaphors to show his nostalgia.
Top Tip: Always connect your analysis back to the specific focus in the question - don't just spot techniques, explain how they achieve the writer's purpose.
