The Mother's Farewell

Ever wondered what it's really like for families when soldiers leave for war? Weir shows us the intimate, heartbreaking moments before a son departs. The poem opens on Armistice Sunday, immediately connecting personal loss to national remembrance.

The mother performs simple, caring tasks - pinning a poppy to his blazer, removing cat hairs, smoothing his collar. These mundane details become precious memories, showing how conflict affects ordinary families. The poppy's "spasms of paper red" suggests both remembrance and the violence of war.

Nostalgic memories flood back as she resists her motherly instincts to protect him. She wants to touch his nose "like Eskimos" - a tender childhood game that contrasts sharply with the harsh reality he's facing. The biblical imagery of "gelled blackthorns" references Christ's crown of thorns, suggesting innocent suffering.

After He's Gone

The dove becomes a symbol of peace and love, "pulling freely against the sky" while she remains earthbound, listening for his "playground voice catching on the wind." This shows how loss from conflict becomes all-consuming, leaving her searching for traces of him everywhere.
