Bluer than velvet and studded with stars, the night's misty curtain finally suffocated the sunlight and Earth seemed to halt - just for one fleeting second, as though it was readjusting to the night's dimness. The tranquillity of it took me by surprise. I'd never thought this great cacophony of suffering could be silenced by something as simple as its shift from light to dark. Suddenly determined to capture this moment in my memories, I glanced upwards. One thousand pinpricks of hope were scattered irregularly on a canvas and cast their beams like ladders to Heaven, each one a speck of euphoria in an ocean of nothingness. Like a golden drop of paint, the moon shone brightly above me and flooded the scene with its flickering illumination. It seemed ethereal, other-worldly, angelic. Perhaps, I wondered, it knew the significance of this specific night. Perhaps the Heavens had gathered to welcome their newest arrival. I chuckled at the thought. You had always admired the constellations; you would always point out stars as they winked down on us knowingly. It's funny how they seem so much more beautiful now that you are amongst them.
