Wandering aimlessly through the convoluted labyrinth, I finally stumbled upon a bench and sat down to rest. My eyes roved over my surroundings. Streetlights and neon signs put to death the stars which futilely attempted to illuminate the night sky - it blinded me to look at them, sending a searing sting through my skull and casting overwhelmingly bright glares into my vision. Every corner of every street was distorted by their vivid radiance, so I turned my gaze to the buildings above me. Imposing glass skyscrapers extended for miles like great oak trees through the dismal pall of the night, inviting the eye up into the darkness and allowing the mind to ponder the Heavens that lay beyond it. The monoliths lined the edge of the metropolis, entrapping it in their grasp like a giant's fist, though whether to keep the residents in or to shut the rest of the world out I couldn't be certain. Behind me, orchestrating an obnoxious symphony, the noises of the city brawled with each other; they demanded attention. Cars droned past thunderingly, sirens screamed piercingly, mothers reprimanded children, restaurants and nightclubs bustled with vibrant, incoherent shouts. warning me. I didn't know this at the time of course, but it still startled me and I sat up straight, regathering my senses. I contemplated how I ended up here, elaborately attired with nowhere to go, suffocating in this unfamiliar community. Alone. Was I alone? I can't say for sure.
