Introduction

The new Pearson Edexcel GCSE English Language 2.0 specification aims to provide an engaging, functional qualification for students taking English Language as a standalone subject. Key features include:

Engaging contemporary fiction and non-fiction texts
Real-world applicable writing tasks
Equal weighting of two exam papers
Assessment of evaluation skills on non-fiction texts

The qualification is designed to equip students with critical reading, effective writing and spoken language skills needed for further study or employment.

Highlight: This new specification was developed in consultation with English Language teachers to meet the needs of students not taking English Literature.

The structure includes two externally-examined papers covering:

Non-fiction texts (including 19th century texts)
Contemporary texts

Definition: Standard English refers to the formal, "correct" version of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.

Students will develop skills in:

Reading fluently and critically
Writing effectively using Standard English
Expanding vocabulary and understanding of linguistic conventions
Using spoken Standard English

Highlight: The qualification aims to reflect diversity in the texts chosen, considering gender, ethnicity and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Key changes to the Pearson Edexcel GCSE English Language 2.0 specification include:

Addition of text types for writing tasks in Paper 1: Non-Fiction Texts
Updates to the Spoken Language Endorsement sections regarding submission of recordings
Inclusion of a breakdown of Assessment Objectives by component

Vocabulary: Learner Work Transfer (LWT) portal - The system used to submit audio-visual recordings to Pearson for assessment.

The Head of Centre Declaration for the Spoken Language Endorsement has been amended to reflect the new submission process via the LWT portal.
