Introduction

The new Pearson Edexcel GCSE English Language 2.0 specification aims to provide an engaging, functional qualification for students taking English Language as a standalone subject. Key features include:

  • Engaging contemporary fiction and non-fiction texts
  • Real-world applicable writing tasks
  • Equal weighting of two exam papers
  • Assessment of evaluation skills on non-fiction texts

The qualification is designed to equip students with critical reading, effective writing and spoken language skills needed for further study or employment.

Highlight: This new specification was developed in consultation with English Language teachers to meet the needs of students not taking English Literature.

The structure includes two externally-examined papers covering:

  • Non-fiction texts (including 19th century texts)
  • Contemporary texts

Definition: Standard English refers to the formal, "correct" version of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
