Paper 1 Question Breakdown
Question 1 is your warm-up - just list four things about whatever they ask for (character, setting, etc.). It's worth 4 marks and should take you about 5 minutes. Easy points to get you started!
Question 2 focuses on language analysis and is worth 8 marks. You'll write 2-3 paragraphs exploring how the writer uses specific techniques to create effects. Follow the simple Technique-Evidence-Effect structure: identify the technique, quote your evidence, then explain the effect it creates.
Question 3 switches to structural analysis for another 8 marks. Think about how the text is organised - what happens at the start, middle, and end? How does the writer build tension or develop ideas throughout the extract?
Question 4 is the big one at 20 marks. You'll respond to a statement about the text, explaining how far you agree or disagree. Use plenty of quotes and analyse the techniques within them to support your argument.
Top Tip: Questions 2 and 3 use the same analysis skills - just focus on language techniques for Q2 and structural features for Q3.
